Pilgrim Fathers
Southwark has many links with the Pilgrim Fathers who set sail for America in 1620. The story begins before then however. In 1586 a group of people were sent to The Clink for refusing to obey the religious laws of Elizabeth 1, thus beginning a tradition of religious dissent within Southwark.
The dissenters founded a prison church under the guidance of John Greenwood, a clergyman, and Henry Barrowe, a lawyer. They called themselves 'Independents' but were also known as 'Brownists' because of the free thinking of Robert Browne, the headmaster at St Olave's School. Another clergyman, Francis Johnson, soon joined them. He had been ordered by the English Ambassador to Holland to buy and burn the books by Greenwood and Barrowe. Inspired by them he came to visit the authors and found himself being jailed with them!
In 1592 Greenwood, Barrowe and John Penry gained a temporary reprieve and began meeting at a house in the Borough and formally constituted the Southwark Independent Church. However the reprieve was short-lived and Greenwood and Barrowe were executed on 6th April 1593. John Penry was also executed, at a site near the present day junction between Albany Road and Old Kent Road, on 29th May 1593. Roger Rippon, whose house was used for worship, was arrested and died of disease in prison.
On his eventual release Francis Johnson travelled to Newfoundland looking for a place where religious freedom might be possible. He finally settled in Holland where many of the Southwark dissenters had fled to. The remaining members of the group continued to meet in secret before being brought into the open by Henry Jacob in 1616. Jacob had been influenced by the writing of Johnson and in 1620 some members of the Southwark Church were given permission to sail to America. It was this group who went on

42. Mayflower And The Pilgrim Fathers
The PilgrimFathers’ Voyage with the Mayflower . The Pilgrim Fathers were asmall group of English Puritans who had separated from the Anglican Church.

Maritime Topics On Stamps : The Pilgrim-Fathers’ Voyage with the 'Mayflower'
In 1620 a group of religiously separatists chartered a ship called 'Mayflower'. Around that time, there were supposedly four different ships with this same name, so we do not know exactly which one it was that sailed to America. It is said that the 'Mayflower' fought against the Spanish Armada in 1588. From this we may assume that she had similar measurements and appearance of a galleon. A three-masted ship with a high platform aft, of approx. 180 tons, length of 90', beam 24', depth 13', armed with 10 cannons (in 1588), crew of 40. It is not known whether there were three square sails set on foremast and main mast (as shown on the Mali stamp) or just two. The 'Mayflower' was employed bringing wine from the Mediterranean to England and outward bound she carried furs and bales of cloth to France.
The Pilgrim Fathers were a small group of English Puritans who had separated from the Anglican Church. After fleeing to the Netherlands, in 1607/08, seeking refuge from persecution in England, they decided to pursue greater religious freedom in Colonial America.
They made a contract with English merchants who chartered two ships for the pilgrims and financed the journey. In return, the emigrants were to send back cargoes of fish, furs and lumber. On July 22, 1620, the emigrants boarded the 60 ton ship 'Speedwell' (left stamp) in the Dutch port Delftshaven and sailed to Southampton. There they changed over to the larger 'Mayflower', and both ships were intended to sail to America together. Both ships left port on August 5, 1620. Shortly after departure the 'Speedwell' was found to be leaking and both ships returned to Dartmouth (right stamp).

THE PILGRIM FATHERS
The letters patent issued in 1621 by King James I gave the Mayflower Pilgrims the right to own the land where they had settled. A letters patent is a public document in which a king or queen confers certain rights on the holder. Ten years after the Pilgrims landed, English Puritans started arriving in New England in large numbers. The city of Salem was founded in 1626, and in 1692 witchcraft trials held there led to the execution of 20 townsfolk, most of them women. Knight International

On The Trail Of On the Trail of the Pilgrim Fathers
On The Trail of the Pilgrim Fathers
Author: J Keith Cheetham
Binding: PBK The fascinating, true story of the founding fathers of the United States, their origins in England and their harrowing journey to a New World. After harvest time in 1621 around 60 men, women and children held a great feast in gratitude to God to celebrate their deliverance and the first anniversary of their leaving England to found a settlement in North America. These people became known as the Pilgrim Fathers. The feast was repeated annually and became known as Thanksgiving. Almost 400 years later, US citizens still celebrate Thanksgiving. But who were the Pilgrim Fathers? The political situation in 16th and 17th century England was such that those who differed from the established church were persecuted, punished and humiliated. The Puritans determined to leave English shores rather than submit to changing their beliefs. In this account, Keith Cheetham tells of their flight to Holland, their subsequent departure from Plymouth on the Mayflower in September 1620 and the perils that faced them in the New World. These are true stories of tragedy and danger as well as success.

The Great Controversy
between
Christ and Satan

Chapter 16 The Pilgrim Fathers T HE English Reformers, while renouncing the doctrines of Romanism, had retained many of its forms. Thus though the authority and the creed of Rome were rejected, not a few of her customs and ceremonies were incorporated into the worship of the Church of England. It was claimed that these things were not matters of conscience; that though they were not commanded in Scripture, and hence were nonessential, yet not being forbidden, they were not intrinsically evil. Their observance tended to narrow the gulf which separated the reformed churches from Rome, and it was urged that they would promote the acceptance of the Protestant faith by Romanists. To the conservative and compromising, these arguments seemed conclusive. But there was another class that did not so judge. The fact that these customs "tended to bridge over the chasm between Rome and the Reformation" (Martyn, volume 5, page 22), was in their view a conclusive argument against retaining them. They looked upon them as badges of the slavery from which they had been delivered and to which they had no disposition to return. They reasoned that God has in His word established the regulations governing His worship, and that men are not at liberty to add to these or to detract from them. The very beginning of the great apostasy was in seeking to supplement the authority of God by that of the church. Rome began by enjoining what God had not forbidden, and she ended by forbidding what He had explicitly enjoined.

60. Gestuntel Met Pilgrim Fathers-imago
Auteur Eric Krebbers. Gestuntel met Pilgrim Fathersimago. De voorvaderenvan de Amerikaanse elite, de Pilgrim Fathers, woonden in Leiden.
http://www.gebladerte.nl/10090l05.htm
