On the Cosmic Horizon
Ten Great Mysteries
For Third Millennium Astronomy
Preface, Introduction, and Mystery 10
Preface
Outside of religion, no human pursuit deals with deeper questions of our existence than astronomy. Thus it is no wonder that astronomy has long captured the public imagination. Stories of astronomical discovery often make the headlines, and astronomical images and ideas infuse many aspects of our culture. Today, however, the pace of astronomical discovery is so rapid that even professional astronomers sometimes have difficulty staying current. For everyone else, it’s hard just to keep track of what professional astronomers are looking for, let alone to understand what they find. That’s probably why friends and acquaintances who know me as an astronomer often ask, “What are the big questions in astronomy today?” This book is my answer. Its primary purpose is to help you understand and enjoy the stories that are likely to dominate the astronomical headlines over the next decade or more. The book is designed to be accessible to anyone with an interest in the great mysteries of our universe, regardless of whether you’ve studied much astronomy before. As you’ll see if you flip through the pages, it takes the form of a Top 10 List of cosmological questions that I call “mysteries for third millennium astronomy” to emphasize that they will be among the most active topics of research in coming decades. I’ve deliberately avoided questions that most astronomers consider settled, as well as questions that are unlikely to be answered in the near term (such as

Biographical history
Friedrich Robert Donat was born on 18 March 1905 in Withington, Manchester, the fourth and youngest son of Emil Ernst (1863-1939), a Polish-born civil engineer, and Rose Alice ( Green, 1864-1964) who came from Whitby in Yorkshire. He attended Ducie Avenue Central School in Ardwick, Manchester, later moving to the Central High School for Boys. His memories of school were mixed: he was not an outstanding scholar and as a schoolboy he also suffered from a serious stammar. Outside school one of his principal passions was the cinema, but from an early age he was also enthusiastic about the theatre, staging plays in the garden shed at his home in St Paul's Road which he transformed into the 'Star Theatre of Varieties'. He subsequently became a pupil of the well-known Manchester elocutionist, James Bernard, under whom he received stage-training and elocution lessons which helped him to shed both his stutter and his broad Lancashire accent (although he was to enjoy reviving this in stage and film roles later in life). Under Bernard he also began to develop his famous speaking voice and his gift for reciting verse. His teacher advocated a stage career for the young Robert, who consequently left school at 15; he worked as Bernard's secretary to fund his continued lessons, while taking part in dramatic recitals at venues across the North West of England.

July Why are canna flowers so unusual? chelsie The garden canna has a confused parentage. There are fifty to sixty species (depending upon the authority) found in the tropics and subtropics of Asia and the Americas. Prized for the dramatic foliage and odd flowers, Canna have been grown, accidentally and intentionally hybridized, and traded between Western gardeners for more than four hundred years.
