Born on July 12, 1865, in Maples, Indiana, Lucy Fitch attended the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston (1883-86). She worked
as an illustrator for the Prang Educational Company in Boston for a year and then taught for four years in the School of Fine Arts of the newly opened Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. In 1891 she married Dwight H. Perkins, with whom she settled in Chicago. She worked as an illustrator for the Chicago office of the Prang firm, painted murals in schoolrooms, taught art, and lectured. In 1906 she published her first book, The Goose Girl, a collection of rhymes for children. These prints probably came from that collection of rhymes.

Twin Tales: Lucy Fitch Perkins Etexts A trained artist, book illustrator, and art teacher, Lucy Fitch Perkins is best remembered today for writing and illustrating the long-running Twins of the World series, published between 1911 and 1938.
Born in Maples, Indiana, on July 12, 1865, Perkins studied art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, worked as a book illustrator, and taught art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. After her marriage to an architect in 1891, she moved to Illinois and had two children, and continued to illustrate other people's books. When a publisher friend suggested that she write her own books, Perkins's interest in children from various landssparked by visits to Ellis Island, where immigrants arrived in the United States, and to a Chicago school filled with children of different nationalitiesled her to write and illustrate what became the Twins of the World series.

Uses and products of the crooked knife Please also see the links page for additional information on uses and products In the account of the Stefansson Arctic Expedition of 1908-12, Ilav , an Eskimo who had been a source of help and information, told how he had first become acquainted with the local superstitions about killing animals when he wintered with Eskimos named Kaxotox and Kunnak and Kaxotox's father at the Horton River. He had killed a wolf and when he returned home that evening and reported the event, the father said he must not eat cooked food or drink tea for five days. All new to Ilav but the old man told him if he broke the rules he would either die, be very sick, or suffer great misfortune. He soon broke the rules but noticed no difficulties. When he later killed a polar bear the old man informed him that he must not work with wood the following day. As a charm the old man wanted to hang a crooked knife from the roof. Ilav refused the well -meant assistance. In Wolf Run , another volume in the same boy's series as the earlier quoted Sowed by the Wind, Elijah Kellogg again mentions the crooked knife among the small list of tools belonging to a frontiersman: " ...a broad axe, three narrow axes, a tomahawk, jack-knife, draw-shave, awl, straight, and made from an old three cornered file...and a crooked knife, bent in the form of a half circle, with a chisel edge, the handle standing at right angles with the blade, with a rest for the thumb, and drawn toward the workman when used. With this knife he scooped from beech and birch whorls bowls and other dishes."
