MUNICIPAL ART Lucy Fitch Perkins The Chautauquan 36 (February 1903):516 Eve Among the Puritans: A Biography of Lucy Fitch Perkins (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1956). In searching for the expression of his idea, the modern reformer rarely needs to go farther than to the pages of his Emerson. There, compactly enclosed in one of the rare sentences of the Serene Sage, he is quite sure to find the vital germ of his though clothed in pungent words, and proportionately related to other phases of thought. The first consideration of the modern advocate for municipal art is well expressed in this passage: "Beauty will not repeat in America its history in Greece.... It is in vain that we look for genius to reiterate its miracles in the old arts. It is its instinct to find beauty and holiness in new and necessary facts, in the field and roadside, in the shop and mill.... It will raise to a divine use the railroad, the insurance office, the joint-stock company." In his triumphant optimism he even includes "law, primary assemblies, and commerce" among the activities to be redeemed by art from the clutches of avarice. "All the virtues", he insists, "range themselves on the side of prudence, or the art of securing a present well-being, and, begin where we may, we are pretty sure, in a short space, to be mumbling our ten commandments."

The Twins Homepage
During the early part of the twentieth century, a woman named Lucy Fitch Perkins (1865-1937) wrote a series of children's books known as "The Twins Books", published by the Riverside Press of Cambridge, MA. As this title suggests, each of the 26 books in the series featured a set of twins. Almost all of the sets were made up of one boy and one girl, the only exception being The Spanish Twins , which starred two boys. Each book took place in a different country or time in America's past. The main purpose of these enjoyable stories seemed to be to make life in foreign cultures and past times easily accessable to "modern" American children. Many of the cultural books very slyly describe the repression of women in other lands, most prominantly Asiatic ones. However, this is not immediatly apparent to the child reader of the novels, in fact I myself only noticed it in the past few years. (NB: I am almost 19) These books, once very common, are now hard to find. I have been a collector of the series since the fourth grade and now as a college freshman am almost done. I think that these stories have lost none of their appeal over the years, and I am ever hopeful that someday soon they will be re-released. Books should never be forgotten.
Here is a list of the books I own and a brief plot summary of each. I hope this is helpful to other fans and interesting too.

PREFACE
In this sad hour of the world's history, when so many homes have been broken up, and so many hearts burdened with heavy sorrows, it is comforting to think of the many heroic souls who, throughout the struggle, have gone about their daily tasks with unfailing courage and cheerfulness, and by so doing have helped to carry the burdens of the world, and to sustain other hearts as heavy as their own. It is comforting, also, to know that there are many instances of happy reunions after long and unspeakable anxieties, adventures, and trials. This story of two little Belgian refugees is based upon the actual experience of two Belgian children, and the incident of the locket is quite true. The characters of the eel-woman and the mother of the Twins have also their living originals, from whose courage and devotion the author has received much inspiration. [Page] [Page] CONTENTS I.

    Perkins, Lucy Fitch
(1865-1937), writer of children's books Born on July 12, 1865, in Maples, Indiana, Lucy Fitch attended the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston (1883-86). She worked as an illustrator for the Prang Educational Company in Boston for a year and then taught for four years in the School of Fine Arts of the newly opened Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. In 1891 she married Dwight H. Perkins, with whom she settled in Chicago. She worked as an illustrator for the Chicago office of the Prang firm, painted murals in schoolrooms, taught art, and lectured. In 1906 she published her first book, The Goose Girl, a collection of rhymes for children. A Book of Joys: A Story of a New England Summer appeared the following year. With The Dutch Twins (1911), Perkins began a series of geographical and historical storybooks that proved enormously popular. Humorous, unpedantic, and illustrated in her own whimsical style, the "Twins" series extended to 26 volumes, including Irish Twins Belgian Twins Italian Twins Filipino Twins Pioneer Twins Indian Twins Spanish Twins (1934), and
