National/US: How to Save 60,000 Lives a Year
February 23, 1999 MITZI PERDUE: Saving 60,000 lives annually Are you ready for an extraordinary statistic? Dr. John Graham from the Harvard School of Public Health says that if we allocated our treatment and prevention resources more wisely, we could save 60,000 lives a year in this country alone. To get an appreciation for the stakes involved, remember that 40,000 people a year die of AIDS in this country each year and 48,000 die in traffic accidents. "Imagine a pill," Graham says, "that would eliminate the equivalent of all of the AIDS deaths or all the traffic deaths." Graham and his colleague, Tammy Tengs from the University of California at Irvine, have been studying what really works - and what doesn't work - when it comes to keeping us safe and healthy. The results are surprising. "We investigated 500 programs," Graham says, "and we learned that some are highly effective: vaccinating children for mumps or rubella, painting edge lines on rural highways or taking the lead out of gasoline." On the other hand, the data show that a number of programs accomplish very little while costing a great deal. Included in the list: reducing exposure to radiation from nuclear waste storage facilities or power plants, or reducing further the already minute amounts of pesticides in our foods.

Learning from the reptiles By Mitzi Perdue
Science Scene Can you guess which kind of animals elementary school kids want to see first when they visit a zoo? Roger Birkel, executive director of the Baltimore Zoo, doesn't have to guess. His zoo and others have taken surveys and the answer is clear-cut: Elementary kids are most interested in reptiles. Given a choice, young kids want to see such creatures as snakes and lizards. Birkel isn't quite sure why, but knowing that it's true he has some great ideas for building on this interest. The Baltimore Zoo is undertaking a $60 million renovation, and the first part of it will be in the Reptile House. "In the past," he says, "if you visited a reptile exhibit you probably saw a collection of boxes in the wall. To the visitor, it looks like no more than a display of animals taken in the wild." In his future exhibit, the behind-the-scenes activities will be right out front for all to see. For example, today you can see a Bengal monitor in a small cage. In the future, you'll get to see much more. You'll get to see the veterinary facilities where animals are being treated or the kitchen where the food is prepared. You'll even get to see the incubators where the young reptiles hatch.

Tobacco heir Patrick Reynolds is an unlikely advocate for smoking cessation Did you know Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury received some of the tobacco restitution funds that grew out of the landmark tobacco cases? And that part of that money went for having one of the heirs of the Reynolds Tobacco Co. address our community about smoking cessation?
Patrick Reynolds may seem like a surprising choice for an anti-smoking speaker. Still, if you had heard his talk, you'd know why having a smoke-free America is a lifelong crusade for Reynolds.

Greenland is a canary
October 23, 2000
By MITZI PERDUE Just how much global warming is the Earth undergoing? There are many reasons to care about this question, but the reason that most interests Bill Krabill, a scientist at the Goddard Space Center at Wallops Island, Va., is that global warming could mean the melting of water stored in the polar icecaps. According to Krabill, three-quarters of the world's population lives within a couple of miles of a coastline. Even a small rise in the sea level would mean a devastating impact on people in these areas. Knowing the immense importance of the issue, Krabill and his colleagues have been trying to assess the likelihood of its actually happening. One way of getting a handle on the issue is by studying the ice sheet that covers Greenland. Why Greenland? It turns out that Greenland may be better suited for tracking climate change than any other region in the world. Greenland's ice cover is only one seventh the size of the ice sheet in Antarctica, and it's far more sensitive to climate change. The Antarctic ice sheet is so large that it has its own climate system and interacts with the rest of the world's climate system at a relatively slow rate. Greenland, on the other hand, protrudes into the temperate latitudes and responds much more rapidly to climate change.

Power Talk radio show hits local airwaves
By Pete Beisser
Staff Writer
Kristin Roberts photo Jack Gillen and Ken Barnett, radio personalities for station 101.1 WQMR, during the on-air talk show inside the local station in Ocean City.
In a small second story room looking out at Coastal Highway, two men sit face-to-face every morning to converse about the news. Covering the table between Jack Gillen and Ken Barnett lay an assortment of national and local newspapers, which they'll draw from to help kick start a two-hour exchange centering around current events. Similar scenes between co-workers occur daily around water coolers throughout the Eastern Shore; the big difference here is that the chats Gillen and Barnett have are broadcast live on the radio and heard by thousands.

Monkeys make bad pets

By MITZI PERDUE
Scripps Howard News Service - Infant monkeys are adorable and in many ways like human babies. Still, if you ever have the urge to buy one for a pet, April Truitt has some important advice for you: Don't. Truitt is the founder of the Primate Rescue Center (PRC) and knows why buying a pet monkey would be a seriously bad idea. Before we get to her reasons, though, why would anyone want a pet monkey? The answer is that, in some circles, at least, a pet monkey is a status symbol. And people who long for children or who are going through empty-nest syndrome sometimes feel that a baby monkey could fill the gap. The result is that hundreds of people in this country pay anywhere from $3,000 for a capuchin monkey to $40,000 for a female chimpanzee. It's legal to do it and you can find infant monkeys for sale on the Internet. However, if you do buy one of these animals it's just about guaranteed that you'll regret it. As Truitt says, "The media portrays them as substitute humans, but what you don't see is that these animals are capable of inflicting horrendous damage." If you're not familiar with the innate drives of monkeys, it may surprise you to know that their capacity for doing "horrendous damage" is hard-wired into them. It's the result of the monkey's hierarchical nature.
