Samuel Pepys (1633
Samuel Pepys was born on February 23rd 1633 in Salisbury Court off Fleet Street. His father, John, was a tailor, his mother Margaret Kite was sister of a Whitechapel butcher and Samuel was fifth in a line of eleven children.
By origin the Pepyses were country folk who, from the 13th century onwards had held land around Cottenham in Cambridgeshire, including the manor of Impington. In 1618 Paulina Pepys married a brother of the 1st Earl of Manchester, Sir Sydney Mountagu, who in 1627 had acquired the house and estate of Hinchingbrooke, near Huntingdon.
Samuel was sent off to Huntingdonshire in 1642 to live with his uncle, Robert Pepys of Brampton, who served in the household of his relatives, the Mountagus of Hinchingbrooke. Samuel attended the grammar school at Huntingdon, which counted amongst its ex-pupils not only Oliver Cromwell but also Edward Mountagu, the young squire of Hinchingbrooke. The latter, 8 years older than Samuel, inherited the Hinchingbrooke estate from his father, Sir Sydney, in 1644.
Samuel Pepys returned to London after the civil war and entered St Paul's School. In his diary of November 1st 1660 he recalled how he rejoiced in the execution of Charles I. His future employer, Edward Mountagu, while a supporter of the parliamentary army, broke with his army colleagues over the execution and left politics for several years. Pepys meanwhile attended Magdalene College Cambridge, which today houses his Diary.

23 June - 29 August 2003 The Library has mounted a small display from its collections to commemorate the tercentenary of the death of the diarist Samuel Pepys (1633-1703). As Secretary of the Admiralty, Pepys was for a while one of the most important men in England. His diary, written between 1659 and 1669 and filling six volumes of frank shorthand, is famous for its vivid recreation of events, including the Plague of London (1665) and the Great Fire (1666), and for its wealth of detail. The items on display include a first edition of the Memoirs of Samuel Pepys and a 17th century treatise on tachygraphy shorthand, which was used by Pepys when writing his diary.

Samuel Pepys
Samuel Pepys, who lived from 1633-1703, was a naval administrator and diarist. He was most famous for his diary which he wrote between 1660-69. In his diary of 1668 he states that having visited Salisbury, he and his party wished to proceed to Bath. They started with a guide at about 6 o'clock and travelled across the Salisbury Plain until night, when by a happy mistake they were carried out of their way to a "town", which he later calls Chitterne. Here they found accommodation at an inn, "by and by to bed, glad of the mistake because it seems, had we gone on as we pretended, we could not have passed with our coach and must have lain on the plain all night." He relates that they found their beds, "good, but lousy: which made us merry". They then took the landlord of the inn as guide to Bath and arrived there without further trouble. The inn mentioned in his account is widely believed to have been the "White Hart", which stands on the junction of the B390 with the Tilshead road, in the village. It has been a private house for some years but it's name "White Hart House", serves as a reminder of it's origins and most famous customer. Back

Previous Politics is hurting primary education in Kenya February 06, Samuel Pepys learns Latin – and nothing but Latin The Internet is paying quite a bit of attention to Samuel Pepys (1633-1703), now that you can read his diary on line. So around now was a good time for a new Pepys biography, and Claire Tomalin's Samuel Pepys: The Unequalled Self has attracted further attention to Pepys. Today I bought it in paperback. Here (pp. 30-31) is one of the more striking passages concerning Pepys' schooling, which took place during the time of the English Civil War: I guess that in all sorts of places around the world of now, there must be young people experiencing something similar, but this time it is English that is to them what Latin was to young Sam Pepys. English now being the official public language of large tracts of the world. There is something more about Pepys' education here Posted by Brian Micklethwait at 09:01 PM

Comments Brian, have you read anything about Montaigne yet? Latin was actually his first language his father hired a tutor to speak to him only in Latin from the time he was small, and the family and servants followed along. He didn't learn French until he was in school.

PEPYS, Samuel (1633-1703). Diarist.
Document Signed, addressed at the foot to the Clerke of the Cheque of his Majesty's yard at Chatham, 1 page folio, Navy Office 6 January 1671/2. A warrant to enter (register) one hundred extra shipwrights who have been impressed and sent down by John Shish, signed also by Lord Brouncker and Sir Thomas Allin.
'Whareas for the sooner dispatch of the shippes now in docke and them that are to come in their roome his Royall Highness hath directed the Impresting of One hundred Shipwrights. These are to pray and require you to enter One hundred Such Shipwrights as the Master Shipwright of His Ma ts yard at chatham shall by his notes direct you to enter, or shalbe sent down by Mr John Shish who is impowered to press some here in the River. ...'
On 31 May 1669, convinced that he was damaging his eyesight, Pepys had discontinued his shorthand diary ('which [is] almost as much as to see myself go into my grave') and prepared himself for blindness. His eyesight did in fact improve, although he never resumed the Diary, and the signature of the present document is large and bold, although the ink is slightly faint.
