THE MAN
FROM SNOWY RIVER
There are many kinds of love; this beautiful poem is my tribute to the bond of love and respect that can grow between a rider and his/her horse and the courage of both when the need arises.
THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER was written in 1890 by A. B. "Banjo" Paterson (1864-1941) Australia's national folk poet, who also wrote the words to the ballad, Waltzing Matilda, the unofficial national anthem of Australians everywhere.
It is a long poem, but it inspired the making of a movie with the courage and determination of the young man who is now a legend known as "The man from Snowy River" and his mountain pony.

There was movement at the station, for the word had passed around
That the colt from old Regret had got away,
And had joined the wild bush horses - he was worth a thousand pound,
So all the cracks had gathered to the fray.
All the tried and noted riders from the stations near and far had mustered at the homestead overnight

THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER

IN THE DAYS WHEN THE WORLD WAS WIDE

Dorothea Mackellar (1883-1968) Dorothea Mackellar is known nationally for her poem 'My Country' which is probably the best known of all Australian poems. Generations of Australian school children have learned the stirring lines of this work. The language accurately evokes the seasons and colours of Australia and sounds a chord of patriotism in most Australian hearts. This example of Mackellar's work contrasts Australia with England: MY COUNTRY
by Dorothea Mackellar The love of field and coppice
Of green and shaded lanes,
Of ordered woods and gardens Is running in your veins. Strong love of grey-blue distance, Brown streams and soft, dim skies I know, but cannot share it

As I pondered very weary
o'er a volume long and dreary
For the plot was void of interest
'twas the Postal Guide, in fact,
There I learnt the true location,
distance, size, and population
Of each township, town, and village in the radius of the Act. And I learnt that Puckawidgee stands beside the Murrumbidgee, And that Booleroi and Bumble get their letters twice a year, Also that the post inspector, when he visited Collector, Closed the office up instanter, and re-opened Dungalear. But my languid mood forsook me, when I found a name that took me, Quite by chance I came across it `Come-by-Chance' was what I read; No location was assigned it, not a thing to help one find it, Just an N which stood for northward, and the rest was all unsaid. I shall leave my home, and forthward wander stoutly to the northward Till I come by chance across it, and I'll straightway settle down, For there can't be any hurry

Australian Currency and its history
With the establishment of the first colony of New South Wales in 1788, the need for currency soon became apparent. Convicts received no wages and the early settlers and military personnel had their needs supplied from communal stores. With only a small quantity of English and foreign coins brought with the First Fleet, most of the dealings in the first few years consisted of bartering, with rum being the main means of exchange. Handwritten notes of credit, issued by government officials and backed by the English treasury, were a common form of currency, but these were subject to counterfeiting and devaluation. The earliest currency used was English money, and also the Spanish dollar brought by the early ships. Because of the shortage of English money, and to prevent the Spanish dollars being taken back on the ships, Governor Macquarie had their centres cut out and they became known as 'holey dollars', while the cores became 'dumps'. In 1813 they had "New South Wales 1813" stamped on them, with "Five Shillings" on the reverse side. The 'dump' had "New South Wales 1813" stamped on their cleaned and smoothed surface with "Fifteen Pence" on the reverse side. In 1817 the Bank of New South Wales was established. The first issue of banknotes comprised five shillings, ten shillings, one pound and five pounds and paper tokens for one shilling, one shilling and sixpence, two shillings, and two shillings and sixpence. In 1825 the British Government imposed the sterling standard throughout its Empire and English coins were minted in Australia.

Past masters of metrical perfection speak to modern-day aspirants of the art, and anyone else with ears to hear. (Kilmer) From THE RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM (11th century Persian poet) English translation by Edward FitzGerald (British, 1809-1883) L. The Revelations of Devout and Learn'd Who rose before us, and as Prophets burn'd, Are all but Stories, which, awoke from Sleep, They told their fellows, and to Sleep return'd. LVII. When You and I behind the Veil are past, Oh but the long long while the World shall last, Which of our Coming and Departure heeds As much as Ocean of a pebble-cast. LX. The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ, Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line, Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it. LXI. For let Philosopher and Doctor preach Of what they will, and what they will not each Is but one Link in an eternal Chain That none can slip, nor break, nor over-reach. TO A POET A THOUSAND YEARS HENCE by James Elroy Flecker (British, 1884 - 1915) I who am dead a thousand years, And wrote this sweet archaic song, Send you my words for messengers The way I shall not pass along. I care not if you bridge the seas, Or ride secure the cruel sky, Or build consummate palaces Of metal or of masonry. But have you wine and music still, And statues and bright-eyed love, And foolish thoughts of good and ill, And prayers to them who sit above? How shall we conquer? Like a wind That falls at eve our fancies blow, And old Maeonides the blind Said it three thousand years ago. O friend unseen, unborn, unknown, Student of our sweet English tongue, Read out my words at night, alone: I was a poet, I was young. Since I can never see your face, And never shake you by the hand, I send my soul through time and space To greet you. You will understand!

June, 1997 . Some of my favorites are being written today, not by the recognized poets of our time but by people I know and respect. Meanwhile, here are ten timeless treasures that I've loved longer, if not better. As much as I dearly enjoy humor-oriented light verse, you won't see any of it in this line-up, nor will you see any highbrow. Each poem listed below is one that is special to me either because of the familiarity of growing up with it, or because it has deeply touched my emotions in some way, or even simply because I love the sound of it. I hope you'll find one or all of these to be memorable for reasons of your own.

The Australian currency
Australia was the first country in the world to have a complete system of bank notes based on plastic (polymer). These notes provide much greater security against counterfeiting. They also last four times as long as conventional paper (fibrous) notes.
History of Australian currency
Many forms of currency were used in the Australian colonies after the arrival of the first European settlers in 1788. In the rough early conditions barter was necessary, and payment in commodities like rum sometimes replaced money transactions. Some of the first official notes used in Australia were Police Fund Notes, issued by the Bank of New South Wales in 1816. After Federation in 1901, the date Australia became an independent nation, the federal government became responsible for the currency. The Australian Notes Act was passed in 1910. In 1913 the first series of Australian notes was issued, based on the old British system of twelve pence to a shilling, twenty shillings to a pound.

It is not possible to do justice to the life and time of "A B" in the space available and at the same time keep the readers interest over a few monitor screens. As such, what follows is an all but too brief overview of the man to whom the swagman/shearers of the 1890's, and those of us who have followed them, owe a great debt. Banjo has immortalised the Australian spirit in a song for what ever reason has been braced by the nation as typically Australian. Although the greater percentage of Australians had, or may still have, no idea what the song really meant or why it was written, they could still identify with the ethos of a fair go . They were long and wiry natives from the rugged mountain side, And the horse was never saddled that the Geebungs couldn't ride; But their style of playing polo was irregular and rash - They had mighty little science, but a mighty lot of dash:
