Pater, Walter (1839-1894)
page: The aesthetic of the important and influential Victorian critic Walter Pater reflected a homosexual sensibility. Among British prose writers of the Victorian era, Pater stands as the embodiment of stylistic elegance. His critical essaysranging widely over Classical, Renaissance, Romantic, and contemporary artists and writersare themselves literary works of the first order. William Butler Yeats called Pater's novel Marius the Epicurean (1885, rev. 1892) "the only great prose in modern English." Sponsor Message.
A close student of German philosophy (particularly the work of Hegel) and well read in the French writers of the period, Pater's criticism and fiction were highly cerebral, yet embraced the purely sensuous dimensions of art and life. From the 1870s through the 1890s, he was regarded by the reading public as a major theorist and practitioner of Aestheticism and Decadence. (Pater himself regarded this identification with some perplexity, though his influence on Oscar Wilde, for instance, was clear). His stylistic elegance and his dangerous ideas about art's autonomy from morality, combined with rumors of homosexuality at Oxford, where he taught, made Pater's name virtually synonymous with gay sensibility during the late nineteenth century. In 1876, speaking as a guardian of public morals, W. T. Courthope announced: "we repudiate the effeminate desires which Mr. Pater, the mouthpiece of our artistic 'culture,' would encourage in society."

Some possible discussion topics 1. Pater and his predecessors: In his Preface to The Renaissance , Pater offers a kind of programmatic piece, an assertion of his critical credo. How does Pater's credo differ from that of earlier critics? The relationship between Pater and Arnold might be especially interesting here, since there is one point at which Pater suggests that he is simply extending Arnold's arguments, seconding Arnold's claim that the aim of good criticism is "to see the object as in itself it really is." What do you suppose Arnold would make of Pater's later statements? Would Arnold agree with the notion that critics need not trouble themselves with "metaphysical" questions about beauty or truth? Would he agree that the first step towards knowing an object is to know one's own impressions of that object? Or would he be wary of taking that step? 2. Pater and painting: Pater moves from theory to practicenot that anyone ever really abandons theory, mind youin his famous comments on the Mona Lisa. As you look over those comments, do you think that Pater is still being a good Arnoldian? Is he making a precise record of his observations and reactions as part of a larger attempt to see the Mona Lisa "as in itself it really is"? If not, what is he doing?
