Simply by choosing the size of these particles one can alter properties such as the electronic absorption and emission spectra, vibrational spectrum, or the melting temperature. The origin of these behaviors arises from quantum confinement effects - the particle's size approaches the characteristic length scale of the electronic wavefunction in this regime. For this reason, nanocrystals are often referred to as quantum dots. Individual nanocrystals may also be constituent components of an ensemble. In the event the ensemble itself has periodicity in one or more dimensions, the ensemble is then a lattice of lattices - i.e. a superlattice. These ensembles of nanocrystals may be disordered films, have different periodicities about different axes, or even form structures with periodicity at the wavelength of visible light. Order may be present on multiple length scales. Since these systems are neither as disordered as typical liquids nor as highly ordered as typical bulk solids, the hierarchical spatial ordering can lead to novel interparticle interactions and dynamics.

Rather than the common and external type of knowledge (emanating from book knowledge), the following translation and commentary are a result of an intimate familiarity and direct experience both with an authentic yogic tradition and with western culture, psychology, and language that has been refined, tested in fire, and integrated for over thirty five years of intense practice (sadhana). This work is dedicated toward revealing the universal message of authentic yoga that the sage, Patanjali, first wrote down approximately 2000 years ago. Yoga Philosophy of Jnaneshvara and Patanjali by G. K. Pungaliya

Two sources of ancient Indian thought are Vedas and Agamas. Even if the ultimate aim of both the systems was to attain liberation, or to experience the ultimate truth, or Brahman or Moksha or Nirvana, their teachings, ideologies and philosophies were different, on a number of basic issues and principles. Vedas and Upanishads presume, as is stated in Mahabharata (1) etc. that the originator of the science of the Yoga is Hiranyagarbha. The tradition of Agamas says that the author of this science of Yoga is Adinatha or Shiva or Shankara. Almost all these Agamas are written in the form of conversation between Parvati and Shankara. Patanjali is following the tradition of Upanishads. The philosophy behind Patanjali Darshana is that Sankhya, the Astanga Yoga which Patanjali propagated was in vogue several centuries before Patanjali (300 BC). We get references of Astanga Yoga in a number of Upanishads such as Chandogya Upanishad, Sandilya Upanishad etc. Yajnavalkya explains this Yoga Philosophy to Gargi and other disciples exactly on the same lines as Patanjali does. (2) Yajnavalkya further states that this philosophy of Astanga Yoga was being learnt by him from his masters. This is an indication of the fact that the philosophy of Astanga Yoga is very ancient and was already in practice before Patanjali.

Patanjali:
Codifier of the Yoga Sutras Codifying the Yoga Sutra : Patanjali codified, or compiled in a systematic way, the art and science of Yoga in the Yoga Sutras . The Yoga Sutras succinctly outlines the art and science of Yoga for Self-Realization. Nothing new was created with the Yoga Sutras, but rather the ancient practices were summarized in an extremely organized and terse way. While the Yoga Sutra itself is ancient, archaeological evidence and other texts suggest that the methods described in the Yoga Sutras were being practiced as early as 3000 BCE. Oral tradition states that the date may be even earlier. Dates : Scholars estimate that Patanjali lived some time between 400 BCE and 200 AD, though they are in disagreement about these dates. While the scholars debate the actual dates of Patanjali, oral tradition accounts for the apparent time differences by explaining that the name Patanjali is a surname, and is the name of a lineage and school of teachers, students, and sages, rather than being only one person. However, for convenience sake, Patanjali is spoken of as a single person, who might have been founder of the lineage. Although Patanjali is a surname of the lineage, there have also been several individuals with the name Patanjali, which may or may not have been related with the lineage relating to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali- An Introduction
by Brianna/ shantiprana Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are divided into four chapters, the first of which is called Samadhipada. In it, Patanjali gives his definition of yoga, and discusses various problems one might confront on the path to yoga. 1.1 "atha yoganusasanam" The first word, atha, is a kind of prayer, for both an auspicious beginning, and a successful conclusion of the work. This sutra can be translated as, "Here begins the authoritative instruction on yoga." Patanjali has not made any claims as to being the founder of yoga. He has studied under his own master, and is passing on the wisdom of the tradition. 1.2 "yogasgcittavrttinirodhah" Here is one of many beautiful definitions of yoga. "Yoga is the ability to direct the mind exclusively toward an object and sustain that direction with no distraction." What is meant by this aphorism? It means the state of one-pointedness. My teacher used to tell us, "We spend our whole lives with our minds going in a thousand direction, and our bodies going in one. In Hatha Yoga, we strive to make the body go in a thousand directions, and the mind go in one." I love this analogy. It applies to all yogas; hatha, kundalini, bhakti, laya, all are differing paths to the same oneness. What exactly is the direction we should be directing our minds? Towards highest truth, noble understanding, absolute bliss, pure compassion. All are one. Yoga brings the fragmented and fluctuating mind into pure truth.

Raja Yoga of Patanjali:
Unraveling the Threads of Enlightenment August 22-27, 2004 Inner peace is within our grasp.
And the eight-fold path of Raja Yoga provides a roadmap for finding it.
In his classic Yoga Sutra, Patanjali systematically outlines a technology for reducing suffering. Yet, it is easy to get lost in the complexity of the Sutra and miss its brilliance if you don't have a guide.
Using an actual "roadmap of the sutras" designed specifically for this highly experiential program, we will learn to navigate the path of practical wisdom contained in Patanjali's classic work. Described as the "heart of yoga" the Yoga Sutra provides concrete tools for self-understanding. We will use these tools and focus on their clear, practical applications in our daily lives. We will weave together specially selected asanas pranayama , yogic meditation, chanting, lively discussion, journal writing, along with powerful rituals and experiences, all grounded in the philosophy of Raja Yoga and designed to satisfy our soul's yearning for serenity.
