Francis Parkman Memorial, 1897-1907 (1905 and 1906) Location: Near Jamaica Pond Olmsted Park, Jamaica Plain, Boston Description: Francis Parkman (1823-1893), America's greatest narrative historian, was the first great writer who understood the character and motive of the Native Americans. When twenty three and a Harvard graduate with high honors, a dead shot with a rifle, and a master of tame and wild horses, he rode west to witness the wilderness firsthand and passed several months with the unconquered Sioux. He wrote The Oregon Trail and described his monumental France and England in the New World as "the history of the American forest; for this was the light in which I regarded it." French's depiction of an Iroquois standing in a pine forest could not be more fitting for Parkman. Tourism Links for Boston www.boston.hotel-discounters.com/

The Oregon Trail by Francis Parkman Parkman (1823-1893) laconically narrates his series of misadventures involving Indians, buffalo, and bad weather in this account of his long journey from St. Louis to the wild west and back, beginning in spring of 1846. One disaster after another makes "The Oregon Trail" a highly amusing tale, but it also contains a lot of beautiful descriptions of the prairies and of Indian ways of life. Parkman tried to become a member of an Indian village, and while not entirely successful, he did make some interesting observations along the way and he describes his experiences wonderfully.

In these the style, at first somewhat turgid, gradually improved, and became clear and forcible, while retaining its original vividness. Parkman spared no labour in collecting and sifting his material, much of which was gathered in the course of visits to the places which were the scenes of his narrative, and his books are the most valuable contribution in existence to the history of the struggle for Canada and the other French settlements in North America. He also wrote two novels, which had little success, and a book upon rose-culture. Parnell, Thomas Spectator , and aided Pope in his translation of the Iliad . He wrote various isolated poems showing a fine descriptive touch, of which the most important are The Hermit, The Night Piece

    • Pre-1630: Area around Jamaica Pond was a summer camp for Wampanoags who wintered near the Neponset River in Mattapan. Some feel that the name for "Jamaica" is the corruption of an Indian Chief's name from the 1640s. The Road to Dedham (today Centre Street) and the Dedham Turnpike (today Washington Street) are the main streets in town. Originally part of the Town of Roxbury (1631) the area that is now known as Jamaica Plain was settled slowly for its first forty years. Although not officially chartered as a town, Jamaica Plain is mentioned in the Roxbury town records. Roxbury Reverend John Eliot (1604-1690), "Apostle to the Indians," donates seventy-five acres for a school. Eliot stipulates that the school admit children of all races: white, African American, and Native American. The school is not officially incorporated until 1804. It is remodeled in 1889. Linden Hall is built on Centre and Pond Streets for Reverend John Troutbeck, assistant rector of King's Chapel, distiller, and loyalist. It is named for the linden trees that used to flank the walkway.
