Index I - Biographical Index
[For an explanation of the conventions of this Index, see Section III of the Introduction] Abbott Abercromby , Julia Janet Georgina, 4th Lady Abercromby (d. 1915). Sister of Robert Haldane-Duncan, 3rd Lord Camperdown (q.v.), who married the 4th Lord Abercromby in 1858. Artist (exhibited at R.A. 1888), whose portrait of BJ, painted in 1892, was reckoned to be an especially good likeness. She probably met BJ through her brother, and although very little is said of her in the biographies, the fact that she was the recipient of some of his more personal letters suggests that she became a close friend of BJ. Acland , Sir Henry Wentworth (1815-1900), Radcliffe Librarian 1851-1900, Curator of Oxford University Galleries and of the Bodleian Library, Regius Professor of Medicine 1858-1894. Influential scientist, with special interest in medical matters. He did much to reform the teaching of medicine and other sciences in Oxford, and took a leading role in the campaigns to build the University Museum and the Radcliffe Science Library. Although he and BJ first met in 1844 through the agency of Sir Benjamin Brodie the younger (q.v.), there was little friendship between them for most of their lives; indeed some of BJ's references to him in letters suggests that he actively disliked him. Only during BJ's Vice-Chancellorship did both men become good friends, and Acland did much to look after BJ's declining health in his last years.

    The Palgraves: A Victorian Chronology
TRIAL VERSION The Palgraves were an extraordinary familyfour brothers who in widely separate fields each earned recognition. This chronology records their accomplishments, with a focus on Francis Turner Palgrave, the friend of Tennyson, editor of The Golden Treasury and the twenty-first Professor of Poetry at Oxford. The cast of characters includes Sir Francis Palgrave, his wife Elizabeth, her father Dawson Turner (banker, botanist, antiquary, art collector), and the four sons: Francis Turner (poet, editor, man of letters, known as Frank); William Gifford (travel writer, Jesuit missionary, diplomat; known as Gifford or Giffy); Robert Harry Inglis (economist, known by Inglis); Reginald F. D. (Clerk to the House of Commons). Major sources for the chronology:
    • The Dictionary of National Biography entries for Francis, Gifford, and Sir Reginald, their father Sir Francis, and their maternal grandfather Dawson Turner. (Sir R. H. Inglis Palgrave is unaccountably omitted from the DNB.)
    • Allen, Mea.

"A true conservationist is a man who knows that the world is not given by his fathers, but borrowed from his children."
John James Audubon (1785 - 1851) This week Nasturtium officinale is thriving in my California garden. I haven't seeded any in over three years because they come up on their own in all the right places. This one is a nice spot of color flowing over the pot that holds 'blue-eyed girl' grass at the end of my koi pond. I love the way the colors and textures reflect on the water. When the nasturtiums are blooming, I know spring is on its way and nothing is more tasty or colorful than a garden salad interspersed with brilliant orange nasturtium flowers and pretty, blue, crunchy, borage flowers. Nasturtiums are easy to grow and a fun, safe plant for children.
