See Thomas Paine's letter to Thomas Jefferson which kicked off the whole idea of the Louisiana Purchase. Referred to by some historians as a mere "pamphleteer", Thomas Paine is actually one of the most important humanitarian figures in recorded history, some insiste one of America's as yet unrecognized Founding Fathers, a free thinker whose works are read and praised by students of freedom throughout the world, especially outside the U.S.A. Contemporary of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Ben Franklin, he first authored Common Sense and then The Crisis in the 1770's, two short texts which fanned the flames of American Revolution and bolstered the flagging spirits of George Washington's starving troops, literally deciding America's victory over British tyranny. Hans "motbok" till Burke blev "Rights of Man", utgiven 1791.

Welcome

How a failed corset maker inspired the American Revolution Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was born in England, tried his hand at a number of jobs and failed. He emigrated to America in November 1774, headed for Philadelphia where he became the editor of a new magazine. Outraged by the April 1775 Battle of Lexington where the British killed American militiamen, he began working on a pamphlet. It was published in January 1776 and sold an estimated 100,000 copies within a few months. The pamphlet, Common Sense , denounced tyranny and called for American independence something hardly anyone had talked about until then. "Thomas Paine's Common Sense ," reflected Harvard University historian Bernard Bailyn, "is the most brilliant pamphlet written during the American Revolution, and one of the most brilliant pamphlets ever written in the English language. How it could have been produced by the bankrupt Quaker corset maker, the sometime teacher, preacher, and grocer, and twice-dismissed excise officer who happened to catch Benjamin Franklin's attention in England and who arrived in America only fourteen months before Common Sense was published is nothing one can explain without explaining genius itself."

Paine, Thomas (1737-1809), Anglo-American political philosopher, whose writings had great influence during two upheavals in the 18th century: the American Revolution (1775-1783) and the French Revolution (1789-1799). Life in England
Paine was born in Thetford, Norfolk, England, to an Anglican mother and a Quaker father. He remained poor throughout his life. At the age of 13 he began working for his father, and at 19 he went to sea. Paine returned to England shortly thereafter and moved through various jobs, eventually becoming an excise officer. As an officer he had to collect taxes from smugglers he tracked down. He was dismissed in 1772 for publishing a document calling for an increase in wages as a means of reducing corruption in government service. His personal life did not fare much better: his first wife died and he later legally separated from his second wife. American Sojourn
Return to England
Paine returned to Great Britain in 1787, and in 1791 and 1792 he published The Rights of Man, in two parts. It was most famous of all replies to the condemnatory Reflections Upon the French Revolution by the British statesman Edmund Burke. It was also an analysis of the weaknesses of European society, proposing such remedies as republican government and progressive income taxes. A million and a half copies were sold in England alone before the book was suppressed. Paine's criticism of monarchical rule in The Rights of Man caused an uproar in England and led the British government to indict Paine for treason. He was tried in absentia while en route to France in December 1792.

(176 items, 0.75 linear feet) B P165 American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street * Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract An important 18th century radical republican theorist and political writer, Thomas Paine was a leading figure in the American Revolution. Despite his humble beginnings and lack of formal education, his reasoned and persuasive writings not only influenced nascent American republican ideology, but profoundly affected the perception of government in England and France as well. His three most influential works are Common Sense The Rights of Man (1791-1792), and The Age of Reason The Richard Gimbel Collection is a heterogeneous mix of items connected only by the fact that they were all collected by Gimbel (1898-1970) and that most were written by, to, or about the revolutionary Paine. Of primary importance are the approximately sixty-five letters or manuscripts in Paine's own hand, including Paine's 1776 manuscript notes for Common Sense , his letter of January 10, 1781, in which he takes leave of his former commanding officer, Nathanael Greene, and his January 6, 1789 letter to Kitty Nicholson Few, in which he writes of his view of matrimony and other personal matters. The collection includes a series of correspondence between Thomas Paine and Samuel Adams, neither of whom were

The son of Quakers, Thomas Paine (1737-1809) made an impressive mark on American society and politics with his stinging political essays. His first, African Slavery in America , was published in 1775 and sharply criticized slavery as unjust and inhumane. Destined to be much more famous and influential was his pamphlet Common Sense, published on January 10, 1776. The basis for this pamphlet was that common sense and plain facts dictated one course of action for the American colonies: separation from England. Advocating the most limited form of government possible, over 500,000 copies were sold, making it one of the most influential documents of the era.

COMMON SENSE
by
THOMAS PAINE
The Anglo-American writer and political theorist Thomas Paine (1737-1809) boldly spoke out for social and political reforms, and played an active role in the American War of Independence. In his great and highly influential pamphlet Common Sense, published in January 1776, was the first bold, explicit assault on monarchical rule, and the first advocacy of the American colonies' independence from Britain. Written in clear language, Common Sense laid out how an independent government could be established and controlled by the people, and how rich and poor alike could share equally in privileges and duties. It was Paine's enlightened contention that in order to ensure liberty, no special preferments should be attached to any one religious sect, but that religious diversity should be respected.

Paine's call to arms for America.
"These are the times that try men's souls."
Paine's reply to an attack on the French Revolution by Edmund Burke.
Paine's biting criticism of the Bible and religion.
"These are the times that try men's souls." This simple quotation from Thomas Paine's The Crisis not only describes the beginnings of the American Revolution, but also the life of Paine himself. Throughout most of his life, he was a failure, living off the gratitude and generosity of others, but his writings helped inspire a nation. He communicated the ideas of the Revolution to common farmers as easily as to intellectuals, creating prose that stirred the hearts of the fledgling United States. He had a grand vision for society: he was staunchly anti-slavery, and he was one of the first to advocate a world peace organization and social security for the poor and elderly. But his radical views on religion would destroy his success, and by the end of his life, only a handful of people attended his funeral.
Brief Biography
On a January day in 1737, Thomas Paine was born in Thetford, England. His father, a corseter, had grand visions for his son, but by the age of 12, Thomas had failed out of school. The young Paine began apprenticing for his father, but again, he failed. So, now age 19, Paine went to sea. This adventure didn't last too long, and by 1768 he found himself as an excise (tax) officer in England. Thomas didn't exactly excel at the role, getting discharged from his post twice in four years, but as an inkling of what was to come, he published

BIOGRAPHY - Thomas Paine, (1737—1809)
PAINE, THOMAS (1737—1809), English author, was born at Thetford, Norfolk, on the 29th of January 1737, the son of a Quaker staymaker. After several years at sea and after trying various occupations on land, Paine took up his father’s trade in London, where he supplemented his meagre grammar school education by attending science lectures. He succeeded in 1762 in gaining an appointment in the excise, but was discharged for’ neglect of duty in 1765. Three years later, however, he received another appointment, at Lewes in Sussex. He took a vigorous share in the debates of a local Whig club, and in 1772 he wrote a pamphlet embodying the grievances of excisemen and supporting their demands for an increase of pay. In 1774 he was dismissed the service for absence without leave—in order to escape his creditors.
A meeting with Benjamin Franklin in London was the turning point in his life. Franklin provided him with letters to his sonin-law, Richard Bache, and many of the leaders in the colonies’ resistance to the mother country, then at an acute stage. Paine sailed for America in 1774. Bache introduced him to Robert Aitkin, whose Pennsylvania Magazine he helped found and edited for eighteen months. On the 9th of January 1776 Paine published a pamphlet entitled Common Sense, a telling array of arguments for separation and for the establishment of a republic. His argument was that independence was the only consistent line to pursue, that “it must come to that some time or other “; that it would only be more difficult the more it was delayed, and that independence was the surest road to union.

Our mission, to educate the world about the life, times and works of Thomas Paine, is designed to ensure Paine's rightful place in history as the preeminent founder of the United States of America. He was, in fact, the first person to coin this phrase. In the course of his lifetime, Paine was an outstanding political and social influence upon the entire world. Dr. Moncure Conway was elected the Association's first president. A noted writer, abolitionist, and confidant to Abraham Lincoln, Conway is credited with writing the first comprehensive biography of Paine in 1892. In 1925, under the leadership of President William van der Weyde and Vice-President Thomas Alva Edison, the Association undertook the initiative to build a museum to house the priceless documents and artifacts of Paine's life.
