Harusame Monogatari. xxiii + 249pp, bibliography, appendices, name front pastedown, elegant bookplate tipped in front free endpaper, edges little soiled, paperback, good copy. Paperback edition. University of Tokyo Press. Tokyo. 1979. "Akinari is best known as the author of Ugetsu Monogatari (Tales of Moonlight and Rain), long regarded as one of the finest literary achievements of the late Edo period. This volume was written considerably later in the author's life and the unadorned, direct, rather colloquial prose style he uses stands in direct contrast to the ornate language and fantastic happenings of Ugetsu Monogatari." Japanese Fairy Tales
Compiled by Yei Theodora Ozaki
A. L. Burt Company, Publishers, New York
Published 1904
Tuttle Co. now publishes a very interesting book on Japanese Tales titled The Japanese Fairy Book by the same author. The Goblin of Adachigahara
Long, long ago there was a large plain called Adachigahara, in the provinces of Japan. This place was said to be haunted by a cannibal goblin who took the form of an old woman.
From time to time many travelers disappeared and were never heard of more, and the old women round the charcoal braziers in the evenings, and the girls washing the household rice at the wells in the mornings, whispered dreadful stories of how the missing folk had been lured to the goblin's cottage and devoured, for the goblin lived only on human flesh. No one dared to venture near the haunted spot after sunset, and all those who could, avoided it in the daytime, and travelers were warned of the dreadful place.
One day as the sun was setting, a priest came to the plain. He was a belated traveler, and his robe showed that he was a Buddhist pilgrim walking from shrine to shrine to pray for some blessing or to crave for forgiveness of sins. He had apparently lost his way, and as it was late he met no one who could show him the road or warn him of the haunted spot.

Urashima Taro
This comb-box you must take care not to open,
Many, many times she told him strictly, then
To Suminoe he returned, and
Though he looked for his home, he could not find it.

Portion of poem 1740 in Volume IX of the Man'yoshu (8th century CE) translated by Thomas McAuley
Why I Chose This Story
When my friend Chizuko showed me how to make a string turtle, I knew I wanted a kamishibai set that featured a turtle. So I went to Kamishibai For Kids who offer 23 different stories, one of which is Urashima Taro. I was already familiar with this story and decided this was the one I wanted to tell . I like this story in large part because of its similarity to Rip Van Winkle, but also because Urashima was a real nice guy. But most important, in terms of utilizing Chizuko's string figure of a turtle, is that a turtle is one of the main characters in the story. [picture of Urashima Taro in kamishibai frame here]
Motifs and Variants of This Story
The Aarne-Thompson Type-Index and Thompson's Motif-Index of Folk-Literature are not very helpful in terms of classifying Japanese folktales, because many of the motifs found in Asian tales are missing from this index. Mayer's

Making a String Turtle
You can travel anywhere with a smile and a piece of string.
A.C. Haddon I "collected" this string figure of a turtle from Chizuko Hiyo Cody in the Computer Lab on September 19, 2002 at College of the Siskiyous in Weed, California. Chizuko came to America from Japan several years ago. She recently married and lives in California for most of the year, spending part of the summer in Japan. She is in her 60s, although you would never guess it. Chizuko was exceedingly patient with me, having showed me how to make the turtle about twenty times before I got it.
People have been passing along and collecting string figures for generations. In the late 1800s, two anthropologists, Alfred C. Haddon and Dr. W.H.R. Rivers, developed a special vocabulary to record the construction of string figures (Gryski 10; Abraham 10). I will use their terminology, as presented by Gryski (10-17), to describe how Chizuko made the string turtle with a two meter string formed into a loop.

The caption wrongly says it's 'virtually unknown in the West,' which I'll try to change to America. " Glen Stark confirmed Heidi's popularity in Switzerland, " I certainly have yet to meet anyone in Switzerland who doesn't know it! People here are blown away when I tell them the same man is responsible for PM. " Stefano Marone chipped in, " Same in Italy... Heidi is universally known, even with people who don't know anime. It is currently on screen now in Italy (RAI) , every morning :)
