James Otis Kaler
James Otis Kaler , born in Winterport, wrote adventure and patriotic biographies that had great appeal for his boy readers. He wrote more than 150 children’s books , many of which were in series and intended for classroom use. He used two pseudonyms, James Otis for most of his books, and Amy Prentice for books written for young readers. At 13, Kaler left home to become a reporter in Boston. When he was only 16, he provided news coverage of Civil War battles and events. He continued in the newspaper profession as a writer and editor and then in 1881 published the book, Toby Tyler or Ten Weeks With the Circus , for which he is best known. The book has remained in print and is available as a book on tape and was also produced as a movie in 1960.

EL-2 RIDGELAWN CEMETERY, Elyria, Lorain Co., OH Copied from Lorain County's out-of-print publication,
Cemetery Inscriptions of Lorain County, Ohio 1980, pps 234-276
by volunteer, Denise Higgins Branch, 2002.

On the west side of Gulf Road, between Ridge Street and Columbus Street, this includes what was earlier referred to as the "Old Elyria" cemetery. Burials go back as far as 1817, and probably earlier. Heman Ely, 1775-1852, the founder of Elyria, and numerous members of his family are buried in the family plot here, in the southwest corner of the old cemetery, all enclosed within an iron fence. When Charles Arthur Ely sold the six lots to the city in 1854, he had reserved a section of Lot #153 for himself and descendants. A handsome Civil War Monument is the site of annual Memorial Day programs.
Only burials to 1930 are recorded and may not be complete.
More up-to-date burial information by Scout, Ian R Mcguire, may be found at http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/oh/lorain/cemetery/Alph.txt
