Robert Fulford's column about William Osler
The Globe and Mail , November 30, 1999) After Sir William Osler's death in 1919, a British cabinet minister wrote to his widow, "nobody ever lived who had to such a remarkable degree the gift of making other people feel that life was worthwhile." That breathtaking compliment suggests one reason why circles of intense love and admiration surrounded Osler for most of his career: He could animate the people near him with the power of his own intelligence, energy and high spirits. He was the most influential doctor of his age and probably the greatest Canadian produced in the 19th century, but what seems most striking about him is his effect on others. How often can we say of a happy and successful man that he was the cause of happiness and success in those around him? Students and colleagues warmed themselves at the hearth of his personality, and his renown as a diagnostician brought him an amazing range of patients. As a fairly young man he treated Walt Whitman and, in later years, he treated both Henry James, the novelist, and his brother, William, the philosopher. In 1913, he examined the pale, thin, young Prince of Wales, who was later briefly Edward VIII. "He does not impress me as a very strong organism," Osler noted. Osler's sense of humour could get him in bizarre trouble.

BOOK REVIEW

AN INDEFATIGABLE SPIRIT
William Osler:
Oxford University Press, 1999, 581 pages
). His textbook, The Principles and Practice of Medicine ), published in 1892, was an amazing success and unquestionably superceded all other medical textbooks of the era ( ) may be questionable. But an additional 75 years have not seen Osler's reputation fade away. Nonetheless, this time may allow the novel interpretation of Osler's life and influence. There was a call for a modern biography of Sir William Osler ( ) and, alas, it is here. William Osler: A Life in Medicine by Michael Bliss is a 581 page biography that has already received wide praise ( Anyone interested in the history of medicine should enjoy this book. Anyone interested in Osler will love it. William Osler: A Life in Medicine does not replace The Life of Sir William Osler ), instead, this second biography complements the first. Cushing's biography will remain a valuable source of information to anyone seeking to know the details of Osler's life, but to the modern reader, the writing seems dated and the book is unlikely to be read from cover to cover. In contrast, Bliss's book is a delightful read and one much better suited to today's readers, both in style and content. Perhaps most importantly though, in describing Osler's life and times, Bliss captures Osler's spirit. Osler was a role model and motivational force to thousands of students and colleagues during his life. With this book, Osler's spirit can continue to motivate students and physicians today.

69. CHR/CRM - Pioneers In Medicine / William Osler
Sir William Osler (18491919). William Osler was born on July 12, 1849, at Bond Head, Ontario one of nine children to parents of Celtic origin.
http://www.chrcrm.org/pioneers_osler.htm
Sir William Osler (1849-1919) William entered Trinity College at the University of Toronto in 1867. He originally intended to follow in his father's footsteps into the ministry but fell under the influence of Dr. James Bovell, a physician and naturalist who was professor of pathology and physiology at the Toronto School of Medicine and lecturer in parasitology at the Ontario Veterinary College. As a result of Bovell's encouragement to pursue the study of internal parasites (trichinosis), Osler was introduced to veterinary medicine in the dissecting rooms of the newly built Ontario Veterinary College on Temperance Street in Toronto.
Osler returned to Canada in 1874 at the age of 26. He practiced in Dundas and Hamilton, Ontario, before accepting an invitation to teach at McGill University. Osler quickly rose in rank from lecturer to Professor of the Institutes of Medicine, which encompassed histology, pathology and physiology. He was pathologist to the Montreal General Hospital and worked in the smallpox hospital. During his 10 years in Montreal, he taught both medical and veterinary students, conducted numerous autopsies and treated patients in the wards.
Osler's early interest in microscopy carried into his teaching career, and he offered special voluntary classes in microscopy at McGill. Osler lectured in pathology, physiology and helminthology to veterinary students at the Montreal Veterinary College (founded in 1855 by Duncan McEachran, an associate and close friend of James Bovell) from 1874 to 1884. He conducted post-mortem demonstrations on all breeds of domestic animals as part of his early morning routine from 7-8 a.m.

Walt Whitman and Sir William Osler:
A Poet and His Physician

(Toronto: ECW Press, 1995) In 1919, Sir William Osler, M.D., born in Ontario, was the Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford University and the most famous medical doctor in the world. In that year he wrote his Reminiscences about his personal and professional relationship thirty years earlier with the American poet Walt Whitman. Dr. Osler died before his manuscript could be published. Now, Philip W. Leon presents for the first time the complete text of Osler's Reminiscences , revealing the extent of the doctor's relationship with Whitman. Whitman, Osler, and their mutual friends form a nineteenth-century tapestry, woven from the worlds of literature, medicine, and art, that includes novelists such as Henry James, Edith Wharton, and Owen Wister; medical doctors such as the Canadian mystic Richard M. Bucke, author of Cosmic Consciousness , and S. Weir Mitchell, famous for his "rest cure" prescribed for Whitman, Wharton, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Virginia Woolf, and others; artists Thomas Eakins and John Singer Sargent, and Victorian literati Edmund Gosse, the Brownings, Swinburne, and the Rossettis. The culmination of research among archival sources at McGill, Johns Hopkins, Oxford, and Manchester

William Osler's tribute to his mentor, Palmer Howard of Montreal, can properly be applied to Osler himself by those who practise medicine today. Osler is largely responsible for so many of the things which we take for granted in medicine medical education within a university environment, strong roots in basic science, application of scientific methods to clinical medicine, emphasis on bedside learning, involvement of students in hospital routines, and the residency system after medical graduation. The highlights of Osler's life and career are outlined in the Box . From a humble childhood, he became the best-known, most-admired and influential physician in the world. The peak of his career was the 16 years (1889-1905) spent as Foundation Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University Medical School in Baltimore. The new hospital and university had been endowed by the bachelor merchant Johns Hopkins, who had profited in the Civil War, but was aware of the poor standards of medical education which prevailed in its aftermath. The standard for Johns Hopkins was to be that "the seal of its diploma should be a guarantee that its possessor is not only a well educated physician in the fullest sense of the word, but that he has learned to think and investigate for himself, and is therefore prepared to undertake, without danger of failure from not knowing how to begin, the study of some of the many problems still awaiting solution".
