Celebrating the contributions of William Osler : 1849-1919 This Web site is an exhibit designed to celebrate the 150th anniversary of William Osler's birth in 1999. The exhibit is hosted by the Alan Mason Chesney Medical Archives and includes images of letters and photographs relating to Osler's life and work that are held within the collections. The site also provides access to the full-text of An Alabama Student and other biographical essays (London : Oxford University Press, 1909) and The old humanities and the new science (Cambridge : Riverside Press, 1920) as well as incomplete access to Aequanimitas, with other addresses to medical students, nurses and practitioners of medicine (Philadelphia : Blakiston's Son and co., 1925). In addition, there is a short biography, chronology and bibliography of works relating to Osler. Books Osler, William Sir 1849-1919 Evolution of modern medicine The full text of The evolution of modern medicine by William Osler, taken from the 1923 edition of the work. The text is separated into files reflecting the chapters of the original, and may also be viewed as a single HTML file. The content of the text is panoramic in its scope, and relates to all the major civilisations of the ancient world, as well as medieval, renaissance and modern medicine, ending with a chapter on sanitation and in particular, tuberculosis. Digitised images of figures from the original work constitute another special feature. The text is part of the University of Virginia Library's Electronic Text Center.

New Brunswick/Piscataway Stratford Camden Sir William Osler In Honor of the Medical Library Association's Centennial, May 1998 The UMDNJ Camden Campus is located across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, PA, where the Medical Library Association celebrated its Centennial in May 1998. In honor of a century of MLA, we highlight the life and writings of one of the Association's founders, Sir William Osler who, during his tenure at the University of Pennsylvania, became a part of Camden 's history when he was called upon to consult on the health of Walt Whitman Dr. Osler studied medicine at McGill University and, after graduating and pursuing further studies in Europe, returned to McGill as a lecturer. In 1884 he became he moved to Philadelphia to become the Chair of Clinical Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania . While there, he became a member of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia , serving on their library committee. It was during this time that he began to visit Walt Whitman at his Camden home, a relationship that lasted until he left in 1889 to become Chief of Staff at Johns Hopkins University and Hospital.

Sir William Osler July 12 December 29 ) was a Canadian physician . He has been called one of the greatest icons of modern medicine , the Father of Modern Medicine, which is what he himself considered Avicenna to be. He was born in Bond Head, Canada West (now Ontario ) and trained at McGill University in Montreal , where he studied the field of medicine. He obtained his MD at McGill University. Later in his life he went south to Philadelphia and was appointed Chair of Clinical Medicine in the University of Pennsylvania . In 1889 he became the first Professor of Medicine in Johns Hopkins University . He later moved to England in 1905 and pursued his career as the Regius Chair of Medicine at Oxford , which he held until his death. Osler was named a baronet in 1911 due to his great contributions to the field of medicine. Osler was a great collector of books relevant to the History of Medicine. After his death, his collection formed the nucleus of McGill University's Osler Library of the History of Medicine, which opened in 1929. Throughout his life Osler was a great admirer of the 17th century physician and philosopher Sir Thomas Browne Osler lent his name to a number of diseases and symptoms.

(1849-1919) was Regius Chair in Medicine, Oxford University, 1905-1919, and Professor of Medicine and Physician-in-Chief at The Johns Hopkins Medical School, 1888-1905. He was the author of numerous works on medicine and medical ethics. Shigeaki Hinohara , M.D., is Honorary President of St. Luke's International Hospital and Japan Society for Medical Education. Hisae Niki is Professor of English at Meikai University. John P. McGovern is the Founder of the American Osler Society and Distinguished Professor of the History and Philosophy of Biomedical Sciences in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center.
