B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Baroness Orczy (1865-1947) - Emma Magdalena Rosalia Maria Josefa Barbara Orczy Hungarian-British novelist, best remembered as the author of THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL (1905). Baroness Orczy's sequels to the novel were less successful. She was also an artist, and her works were exhibited at the Royal Academy, London. Her first venture into fiction was with crime stories. Among her most popular characters was The Old Man in the Corner, who was featured in a series of twelve British movies from 1924, starring Rolf Leslie. "They seek him here, they seek him there.
Those Frenchmen seek him everywhere.
Is he in Heaven? - Is he in hell?
That damned annoying Pimpernel."

(from The Scarlet Pimpernel Baroness Emmuska Orczy was born in Tarna-Ors, Hungary, as the only daughter of Baron Felix Orczy, a noted composer and conductor, and his wife Emma. Her father was a friend of such composers as Wagner, Liszt, and Gounod. Orczy moved with her parents from Budapest to Brussels and then to London, learning to speak English at the age of fifteen. She was educated in convent schools in Brussels and Paris. In London she studied at the West London School of Art. Orczy married in 1894 Montague Barstow, whom she had met while studying at the Heatherby School of Art. Together they started to produce book and magazine illustrations and published an edition of Hungarian folktales. Orczy's first detective stories appeared in magazines. As a writer she became famous in 1903 with the stage version of the

Baroness Emmuska Orczy The Scarlet Pimpernel Introduction
"An apology? Bah! Disgusting! Cowardly! Beneath the dignity of any gentleman, however wrong he might be."
"Now they had drifted quite apart, and Sir Percy seemed to have laid aside his love for her, as he would an ill-fitting glove" (The Scarlet Pimpernel)
Born in Tarna-Ors, Hungary, in 1865, the daughter of the composer Baron Felix Orczy, the extraordinarily named Baroness Emmuska Magdalena Rosalia Maria Josefa Barbara Orczy is chiefly known for the eponymous hero of her novel The Scarlet Pimpernel (1905). She received a convent education in Paris and Brussels, and found moved with her family to London where she studied Art and met her future husband - Montague Barstow - who she would marry in 1894 and collaborate with on the theatrical original of "The Scarlet Pimpernel" in 1903.
Orczy was extremely fond of England (she called it her "spiritual birthplace") and remained there with her husband, who introduced her to various literary types. Her lack of success in the artistic field led her to start writing and found it surprisingly easy to get her early crime stories published (notably "The Old Man in the Corner" (1901) - its hero being a new kind of detective, working at a distance from events). Her interest in murders and underground activities was sparked allegedly by the shocking discovery of one of the infamous Jack the Ripper's victims outside their house in London. Ironically, given its later ubiquity, when it came to trying to publish

Chapters: Chapter 22 Calais The weariest nights, the longest days, sooner or later must perforce come to an end. Marguerite had spent over fifteen hours in such acute mental torture as well-nigh drove her crazy. After a sleepless night, she rose early, wild with excitement, dying to start on her journey, terrified lest further obstacles lay in her way. She rose before anyone else in the house was astir, so frightened was she, lest she should miss the one golden opportunity of making a start. When she came downstairs, she found Sir Andrew Ffoulkes sitting in the coffee-room. He had been out half an hour earlier, and had gone to the Admiralty Pier, only to find that neither the French packet nor any privately chartered vessel could put out of Dover yet. The storm was then at its fullest, and the tide was on the turn. If the wind did not abate or change, they would perforce have to wait another ten or twelve hours until the next tide, before a start could be made. And the storm had not abated, the wind had not changed, and the tide was rapidly drawing out.
