Women in Popular Culture
A wealth of relatively untapped materials await the persistent researcher interested in expanding our understanding of women as both creators and subjects of popular culture. The Dime Novel Collection Pulp Fiction , in the Serial and Government Publications Division.) The first dime novel, Malaeska: The Indian Wife of the White Hunter (Beadle's Dime Novels, series 17, no. 1), was an American romance by Ann S. Stephens (1813-1886). In fact, women wrote many of the stories in this collection of dime novels, which also often feature women or depict them in their cover art. Two extremely rare pieces by Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888), The Skeleton in the Closet and The Mysterious Key, appear in 1867 issues of the Ten Cent Novelettes (series 189). One particularly intriguing title in the Police Gazette Library (series 128)

Margaret Oliphant
Novelist
Margaret Oliphant, 1828-1897, an extremely prolific writer, produced several novels and stories that place her in the front rank of Victorian fiction. Born at Wallyford, East Lothian, she grew up mainly in Glasgow and Liverpool. She was an avid reader and began to write at an early age, publishing her first novel, Passages in the life of Margaret Maitland , in 1849. Thereafter, for the best part of half a century, she produced fiction, biography, travel books and articles on a vast range of topics. Although she lived only for short periods in Scotland, many of her novels have Scottish themes, both historical and contemporaneous. Among her earlier Scottish novels is Katie Stewart , a true story (1853), set in 1745 and drawing on her own family background. A later Scottish novel, Effie Ogilvie (1886), explores the difficulties of a young woman longing to be more than a merely decorative wife.

NUMBER: QUOTATION: The incomprehensibleness of women is an old theory, but what is that to the curious wondering observation with which wives, mothers, and sisters watch the other unreasoning animal in those moments when he has snatched the reins out of their hands, and is not to be spoken to!... It is best to let him come to, and feel his own helplessness.

Much of her work wasn’t published in her lifetime, but since has become available. Queen Mary’s Book: a collection of poems and essays. Edited by P. Stewart-Mackenzie Arbuthnot, 1907. Bittersweet within my heart : the love poems of Mary, Queen of Scots. Susan Ferrier, novelist 1782-1854 Greatly influenced by Jane Austen, and her first book (partially cowritten with Charlotte Clavering, niece of the Duke of Argyll) was a light satire of manners and country life. Her writing was highly moralistic, and she believed novels should convey a moral message as well as entertain the reader. She was best at skewering pretension and eccentricity in Scottish society.
