Although he wrote some valuable travel books, he is probably best remembered for his fascinating life. The son of a judge, he became a lawyer and later secretary to Lord Elgin . He was a correspondent for the London Times during the Crimean War, went with Elgin to China, was an associate of Garibaldi, and traveled all over the world. In 1867 he became a disciple of Thomas Lake Harris in a religious community at Brocton, N.Y. His writings include several travel books, notably A Journey to Katmandu (1852); two novels, Piccadilly (1866) and Altiora Peto (1883); an autobiography, Episodes in a Life of Adventure (1887); and Scientific Religion (1888). He and his first wife, Alice Le Strange, wrote a curious book, Sympneumata: Evolutionary Forces Now Active in Man (1885), inspired by Harris and supposedly dictated by a spirit. After Alice's death Oliphant married (1888) Rosamond Dale Owen, granddaughter of Robert Owen. They established a colony of Jews in Palestine. See her My Perilous Life in Palestine (1928); biography by his cousin, Margaret Oliphant (1891); study by V. and R. A. Colby (1966).

The Butcher of Akko In 1755, Akko becomes the capital of Sidon whose domain extended from Tripoli to Damascus under the authority of the Pasha Ahmad al-Jazzar (1755 - 1804), an Albanian adventurer nicknamed the Butcher or the Slaughter for his legendary cruelty. Laurence Oliphant (1829 - 1888), an English traveler, writer and ardent partisan of the return of the Jews to Palestine, reconstructed a portrait of this personality based on the accounts he gathered about his reign: Al-Jazzar's banker was a Jew of distinguished bearing. One day, the pasha praised his appearance at great length before ordering one of his servants to put out one of his eyes. Some time later, noticing that the banker was wearing his turban at an angle to hide his missing eye, he cut off his nose. In the end, the poor Jew was to lose his entire head...

    The Foundation of Christian Zionism
Christian Zionism is firmly founded upon the teaching of God's Word. It is, therefore, not a political movement, but since it has to do with a land and a particular people it may, from time to time, agree with a certain political perspective. This does not mean that it endorses a particular political philosophy or party. No, it is only prepared to endorse the Word of God and as such it may also be called "biblical Christian Zionism". Christian Zionism seeks to declare the truth of God's word that bequeaths to the people of Israel the land of Canaan as an everlasting possession. This promise was made by God to Abraham some four thousand years ago (Genesis 13:14-18). Moreover, the promise was reiterated time and time again and stressed that loss of domicile, because of rebellion and disobedience, would not mean loss of possession (Deuteronomy 30:1- 6). The God who exiled the Jewish People on two occasions - 586 B.C. and 70 A.D. - has always promised to bring them back and restore their fortunes (Jeremiah 31:10 and Isaiah 11:11). All this because of His promise to Abraham.

    CHRISTIAN ZIONISM
"a movement, largely among Gentile Christians, supporting the right of the Jewish people to return to the Promised Land which has, of course, happened right before our eyes during this century" SUNDAY, 18 FEBRUARY 2001 SPECIAL FEATURE:
Following are two essays written in preparation for the Fourth International Christian Congress on Biblical Zionism, which will convene in Jerusalem on 19-22 February 2001 under the sponsorship of the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem.
    BIBLICAL ZIONISM
    Sustaining Israel Through Biblical Faith
As we assemble for this Fourth International Christian Congress on Biblical Zionism at the start of a new century, the Jewish people and their Christian friends can proudly point to many stunning successes for the Zionist movement over the past 100 years. On balance, the restored nation of Israel stands today as the main focal point of Jewish values and endeavours; a vibrant, stable democracy; a powerful military presence, and a model of technology-driven economic development. But the impressive achievement of a Jewish state in Eretz Israel - realized only through great determination and sacrifice - seems yet to be fully consolidated, as the nation remains under assault from formidable adversaries both without and within.
