Babylon Tuesday, February 29 2000 23 Adar I 5760 IN THE FRAME By Angela Levine (January 28) - The collection of charming but mostly amateurish paintings now on display at Haifa's Maritime Museum, presented under the title of Lady Oliphant's Drawing Room, is an offshoot of the strange story of Alice and Laurence Oliphant and their sojourn here during the 1880s. Sir Laurence Oliphant (1829-1888), British author, traveler and mystic, was an avid promoter of Jewish settlement in Palestine as a means of "fulfilling a prophecy and bringing on the end of the world." Arriving in Haifa in 1882, the Oliphants settled in Haifa's German Colony. Joined there by friends and relatives from abroad, their home became the hub of an altruistic commune based on the tenets of an American sect known as the "The Brotherhood of the New Life." During and after his stay in this country, Sir Laurence promoted a variety of projects which did not come to fruition in his lifetime including Jewish settlement on the Golan. The Oliphants built a second home for themselves on the western outskirts of Daliat al-Carmel where Alice befriended local Druse women, teaching them how to treat simple illnesses and to run their households more efficiently. In 1886, prior to going on home leave, Alice Oliphant died of fever. She is buried in the British military cemetery in Haifa.

The Historical Origins of Christian Zionism It must be acknowledged that the theological interpretation of recent historical events, especially since the founding of the State of Israel in 1948, is made exceedingly complex and controversial since two peoples, Jews and Palestinians, each claim the same land, endowing the same locations with different place names and religious significance, while at the same time promoting rival and contradictory histories about the same events. It is consequently hard for Christians to remain neutral and not take sides, especially when visiting the Holy Land as tourists or pilgrims. As Bowman points out, Most tourists, in accord with the Israel Ministry of Tourism, call the land 'Israel', but in United Nations terminology the land is 'Israel and the Occupied Territories'. This variance in nomenclature reflects a deeper issue of identity; Israel and the area it occupied in the 1967 'Six Day War' constitute a deeply, and violently, divided country. The founding of the State of Israel in 1948, was clearly regarded by most Zionists, whether Christian or Jewish, as signalling the end of a 2000 year exile and as the return to their promised homeland in fulfilment of biblical prophecy and Divine mandate. Palestinians however, regard this traumatic experience as having resulted in the violation of their fundamental human rights to exist autonomously in the land of their birth and forefathers. Since 1948 each community has disputed the grounds under which the other may remain.

Proponents insist, however, that Christian Zionism is mandated in both Old and New Testaments which, they claim, is the source of their motivation.
