LAURENCE OLIPHANT
OLIPHANT, LAURENCE (1829-1888), British author, son of Anthony Oliphant (1793_1859),i was born at Cape Town. He was more happily inspired when he threw over his legal studies and went to travel in Russia. The outcome of that tour was his book on The Russian Shores of the Black Sea (1853). Between 1853 and 1861 he was successively secretary to Lord Elgin during the negotiation of the Canada Reciprocity treaty at Washington, the companion of the duke of Newcastle on a visit to the Circassian coast during the Crimean War, and Lord Elgins private secretary on his expedition to China. Each of these experiences produced a pleasant book of travel. In 1861 he was appointed first secretary in Japan, and might have made a successful diplomatic career if it had not been interrupted, almost at the outset, by a night attack on the legation, in which he nearly lost his life. It seems probable that he never properly recovered from this affair. He returned to England and resigned the service, and was elected to parliament in 1865 for the Stirling Burghs. Another member of the family was Laurence Oliphant (1691 1767) the Jacobite, who belonged to a branch settled at Gask in Perthshire. He took part in the rising of I715,and both he and his son Laurence (d. 1792) were actively concerned in that of 1745, being present at the battles of Falkirk and Culloden. After the ruin of the Stuart cause they escaped to France, but were afterwards allowed to return to Scotland. One of this Oliphants descendants was Carolina, Baroness Nairne (q.v.).

Laurence Oliphant - British journalist, novelist, explorer, diplomat, utopian, and spiritualist. A narrative of his life history indicates the ideal career for a spy travel to areas of diplomatic and military interest, followed by "a pleasant book of travel," and he is rumored to have plotted with Garibaldi in Italy. Prior to the Crimean War , he was a London Times correspondent in Crimea. As private secretary to Lord Elgin, he visited North America in 1855 and India, China, and Japan in 1857-61. As first secretary of the British legation to Edo (now Tokyo) in 1861, he was wounded during an attack on the embassy in Edo by a group of xenophobic samurai, one of many such incidents . In 1865, he was elected to Parliament, but in 1867, he and his mother abandoned their lives in England and joined Thomas Lake Harris at his utopian community in New York state. There is some speculation that Harris had promised him a cure for inherited syphilis, from which Oliphant suffered. He took with him to Harris's Brotherhood six Japanese students from the Satsuma domain, whom he had befriended in London. He later induced a number of other Japanese to join the brotherhood. One biographer (Taylor, 1982) suggests that his attachment to Harris was a result of the dementia of inherited syphilis. His connection with the utopian group lasted until 1881, when he broke with Harris and formed, with his second wife, the daughter of Utopian Robert Owen, his own community in Palestine. His first novel
