FRANCES JENKINS OLCOTT Index according to reading level is appended. TO THE STORY-TELLER This volume, though intended also for the children's
own reading and for reading aloud, is especially planned for story-telling. The latter is a delightful way of arousing a gladsome holiday spirit , and of showing the inner meanings of different holidays. As stories used for this purpose are scattered through many volumes, and as they are not always in the concrete form required for story-telling, I have endeavored to bring together myths, legends, tales, and historical stories suitable to holiday occasions. There are here collected one hundred and twenty stories for seventeen holidaysstories grave, gay, humorous, or fanciful; also some that are spiritual in feeling , and others that give the delicious thrill of horror so craved by boys and girls at Halloween time. Charles W. Moores, Life of Abraham Lincoln for Boys and Girls , when Lincoln was one (PN) he noticed a little girl (DO) who stood crying bitterly He stopped to learn what was wrong (PA) and was told that she was about (PA) to miss a long-promised visit because the wagon had not come You need n't let that trouble you," was his cheering reply (PN) You Just come along and we shall make it all right." Lifting the trunk , and taking the little girl he went a half-mile NuA put her (DO) and her trunk (DO) and sent her (DO) away that is still there Olcott, Frances Jenkins, Good Stories For Holidays Notes 1. This is one of those idiomatic constructions that grammarians will argue about forever. Although I have labeled "about" as a predicate adjective, there are several other possible explanations. Some people might consider "about" to be a prepostion with the infinitive "to miss" as its object. The prepostional phrase would then probably be considered as functioning as an adverb to "was." Other people may simply consider "was about to miss" as the finite verb phrase. No one ever has a problem with this construction, so any of these explanations should be accepted.
    2. Unless they have had a lot of experience analyzing clauses, expect students to have lots of trouble with this one. First of all, the quotation is a subordinate clause that functions as the subject of "was." Some grammarians will argue about "need let" as a finite verb, claiming that it should be explained as the finite verb "need," with the infinitive "to let" as the direct object of "need," as in "you do not need to let ...."

THE SPRING BEAUTY AN OJIBBEWAY LEGEND
BY HENRY R. SCHOOLCRAFT [ADAPTED] AN old man was sitting in his lodge, by the side of a frozen stream. It was the end of winter, the air
was not so cold, and his fire was nearly out. He was old and alone. His locks were white with age,
and he trembled in every joint. Day after day passed, and he heard nothing but the sound of the
storm sweeping before it the new-fallen snow. One day while his fire was dying, a handsome young man approached and entered the lodge. His
cheeks were red, his eyes sparkled. He walked with a quick, light step. His forehead was bound
with a wreath of sweet-grass, and he carried a bunch of fragrant flowers in his hand. "Ah, my son," said the old man, "I am happy to see you. Come in! Tell me your adventures, and
what strange lands you have seen. I will tell you of my wonderful deeds, and what I can perform.
You shall do the same, and we will amuse each other."
