Así, la indagación se plantearía sobre períodos antiguos que datarían de las anteriores dinastías, más como otro punto que quería desarrollar o al menos tener en cuenta, era el cómo sus diferentes cosmovisiones fueron consolidándose o reflejándose mediante la pintura, teniendo en cuenta que además que ha sido una historia altamente comprometida con dimensiones de carácter religioso. Fue así como en primera instancia arribé a mi primera formulación del tema a investigar, el cual fue La estética taoísta: pintura China ; sin embargo, prontamente los inconvenientes se manifestaron al presentarse problemas con la bibliografía, ya que la que se requería era de un carácter muy específico, además dicho problema ponía de relieve la estética taoísta sin ser realmente lo pretendido y también me planteaba problemas con respecto a la noción de tiempo puesto que aquí el tiempo no sería un factor fundamental, pareciendo entonces que la investigación se tornase un tanto más abstracta, considerando ello finalmente como algo paradójico e incongruente. "What's the essence of teaching graduate students?" he asked, responding to a pre-interview question, "Confront them with the high standards of the field, which scares them to death, and then leave them alone." Jane Casey Singer visited him at Harvard in early December to review the great highway that is Asian art history. JCS: In your experience, have students of Asian art exhibited unusual qualities or particular qualities of intellectual curiosity that lead them to study Asian art, as opposed to other historical disciplines? JR: JCS: In addition to the necessity of mastering the languages, is it not crucial that a student have the curiosity to 'enter into' another culture, an empathetic capacity 'to try on' other worldviews, as it were? JR: I think in many cases, people become interested in Asian art and culture because of some intuited or perceived feeling of lack within our own world. There are spiritual resources there that we don't have. Often the spirituality of Eastern religions is embodied in terms that are novel, and it's exciting for students to discover these sorts of realities through the language of Eastern religions. Many of those spiritual elements are present in the Judeo-Christian tradition, but they have become dusty.
