And Other Writings from Ohiyesa
Edited by Kent Nerburn
Ohiyesa, a Dakota Indian also known as Charles Alexander Eastman, is one of America’s most fascinating and overlooked individuals. Born in Minnesota in 1858, he obtained postgraduate degrees and advised U.S. presidents before returning to traditional living in native forests. This reissue contains Ohiyesa’s insights on spirit, the human experience, and white culture’s impact on Native American culture.
Ohiyesa was, at heart, a poet of the spirit and the bearer of a spiritual vision. With increasing fervor as he aged, he was a preacher for the native vision of life. I believe it is his spiritual vision, above all else, that we of our generation need to hear. We hunger for the words and insights of the Native American, and no man spoke with more insight or clarity than Ohiyesa.... — From the Introduction

Eastman Average review score: Bad book I did not like it. It is a bad story. Wolfs are not bad like in the story. Peter doesnt listen to his grandpa, so it is a bad example. Good companion to the music If you are familiar with the Prokofiev symphony, this book makes a good companion to the music. It puts into visual images the story of Peter and the Wolf. What I like most about the book is that, in the end, the duck lives. The ending varies somewhat depending on the version of the recording or book. In this book, it's a happy ending, which is better for younger readers. We use the book by itself sometimes. Other times, my child will read along while we listen to the symphony. A great book for little people who love music! Our children, 3 year old twins, love the music of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. In searching for an age appropriate book to show them the musical instruments that play each of the characters, we found this one illustrated by Ian Beck. Not only are the illustrations lovely, the colors and clothing of Peter, the hunters and the grandfather are interesting to a child. Also, each page shows the instrument played for that part of the story (find it in the box around the text), and in the back a page illustrates each instrument. We cannot recommend this lovely book enough to parents of young children discovering the beauty of music!

Approaching Chautauqua evening programs - Mary McBee, Staff Writer
Jane Addams Third program presentation: Jane Addams

The evening program of Chautauqua on Sunday, Aug., 5, will feature the portrayal of Jane Addams, social reformer extraordinaire of early 20th century America. Helen M. Lewis, a fellow Iowan, will play the roll of Jane Addams. Lewis, a former Pennsylvanian, teaches English and Humanities at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City, and now considers the Midwest her home. Jane Addams was born into a middle class and educated family in Illinois, and inherited a strong social conscience from her father. She graduated from Rockford Seminary in 1881 with an intense desire to devote her life to service for others, yet for some years, was unsure of exactly how to do this. During travels in Europe, however, Addams visited Toynbee Hall, a settlement house in London's poverty-stricken lower East End, and there found the inspiration and focus she so long desired. "Exhorting local politicans to hear the immigrant voice, encouraging working class men to become politically active, and campaigning for women to receive suffrage, Addams held that only when everyone had a share in the political system could legislation become truly representative; only then could America become a true democracy," states Helen Lewis. "Much more than a social worker or political activist, Addams seems a catalyst who inspired others to achieve their dreams, who taught by example the necessity of cultural tolerance, and who stood secure in upholding her values of personal integrity and social democracy, even when she stood alone."

Indian Boyhood
by Charles Eastman Terms Contents CHAPTER I Section II ... CHAPTER XII Section II
My Playmates
HATANNA was the brother with whom I passed much of my early childhood. From the time that I was old enough to play with boys, this brother was my close companion. He was a handsome boy, and an affectionate comrade. We played together, slept together and ate together; and as Chatanna was three years the older, I naturally looked up to him as to a superior. Oesedah was a beautiful little character. She was my cousin, and four years younger than myself. Perhaps none of my early playmates are more vividly remembered than is this little maiden. The name given her by a noted medicine-man was Makah-oesetopah-win. It means The-four-corners-of-the-earth. As she was rather small, the abbreviation with a diminutive termination was considered more appropriate, hence Oesedah became her common name. Although she had a very good mother, Uncheedah was her efficient teacher and chaperon Such knowledge as my grandmother deemed suitable to a maiden was duly impressed upon her susceptible mind. When I was not in the woods with Chatanna, Oesedah was my companion at home; and when I returned from my play at evening, she would have a hundred questions ready for me to answer. Some of these were questions concerning our every-day life, and others were more difficult problems which had suddenly dawned upon her active little mind. Whatever had occurred to interest her during the day was immediately repeated for my benefit.

93. Indian Childhood
Indian Boyhood. by Ohiyesa Eastman, Charles Alexander. This narrative in contrastto the two stories above reveals the experience of the Indian boy.

Indian Childhood
Impressions of an Indian Childhood by Zitkala Sa [Gertrude Bonnin
Zitkala Sa's "Impressions of an Indian Childhood published in the Atlantic Monthly in 1900 characterize the existence of the Indian child as one filled with story telling, hospitality, and love. Sa uses her story as a means to convey the peaceful existence of Native Americans as well as to demonstrate the inherent humanity of a people often described by the white press as "sub-human."
"Nedawi." An Indian Story from Real Life
by Suzette La Flesche
Indian Boyhood by Ohiyesa [Eastman, Charles Alexander]
This narrative in contrast to the two stories above reveals the experience of the Indian boy. His story like that of Sa and La Flesche reveals a childhood of story telling. Yet, because of his status as a young man of a warrior race Ohiyesa's tale also shows the development of a young hunter and warrior. Ohiyesa begins his tale with the question "WHAT boy would not be an Indian for a while when he thinks of the freest life in the world? This life was mine. Every day there was a real hunt. There was real game." Like the other author's Ohiyesa's tale is shaded by his experience as a man who lived in the worlds of both the white man and the Native Americans. His writing style similarly combines the two worlds.

From the Deep Woods to Civilization: Chapters in the Autobiography of an Indian > Customer Review #1: Autobiography of Ohiyesa

If you have read the writings of Ohiyesa (Charles Alexander Eastman); I HIGHLY recommend this book to you. It helped me understand the forces that shaped this man. My favorite areas are The assorted photos of his father "Many Lightnings", his wife, his son Ohiyesa at the age of 5. Events that occured while he was attending school in the East, and the bigotry he encountered from "SOME" white people.

http://www.hanksville.org/daniel/lakota/Lakota.html
Lakota/Nakota/Dakota
The names the people we call Sioux have for themselves are the Lakota, Nakota or Dakota, meaning "friends . . . allies . . . to be friendly." At an earlier time, the Sioux evolved into three main groups speaking different dialects of the same language. The Dakota were the largest group and are considered to be the mother group. The Nakota were next in size, followed by the Lakota. Winter count records indicate that there was strife within the Sioux tribal family which may have been associated with a rise in power of the Lakota. The Dakota, who were also called the Santee Sioux, occupied a region east of the Mississippi in what is currently Minnesota. They were divided into four bands: the Mdewakantonwon , who are now in Minnesota, Flandreau, SD, and the Santee Reservation in Nebraska; the Wahpeton , who are now at the Devil's Lake Reservation, ND, Flandreau, SD, and Sisseton, SD; the Wahpekute , who are now at the Santee Reservation in Nebraska and Fort Peck, MT; and the Sisseton who are at Devil's Lake in ND and Sisseton, SD.
