Cool/Lame
John Doyle vs. Bill O'Reilly
April 27, 2004 10:40 AM John Doyle is one of my favourite columnists. To those who say, "But he's just a television critic," I reply that a) his columns are highly intellectual and insightful, yet witty and entertaining; and b) television is (as Doyle himself has noted) arguably the most ubiquitous and influential medium of our time, and is therefore deserving of serious reflection and criticism. Let me put it this way: I don't watch much TV, but I still read his column.
Anyways, last Monday, Doyle wrote this column in which he encouraged Canadian regulators to allow the Fox News Channel into Canada: Beauty. Bring it on, I say. We're all in need of a good laugh. The barking-mad Fox News Channel is something that most Canadians have only heard about. It's time we saw it for ourselves, and made up our own minds about the phenomenon. We'll find out if this Bill O'Reilly fella is as stupendously pompous and preening as he appears to be in the rare clips we see of Fox News. Bill O'Reilly got word of the article and responded on his show

Division of Pulmonary Biology, Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, Ohio 45267-0541. The effect of glucocorticoid on the regulation of pulmonary surfactant protein B (SP-B) synthesis was studied in a human pulmonary adenocarcinoma cell line. Northern blot analysis demonstrated a marked increase in SP-B mRNA expression after treatment with dexamethasone for 48 h. Actinomycin D, puromycin, or cycloheximide blocked the induction of SP-B mRNA by glucocorticoid. Nuclear run-on experiments demonstrated that the effects of

    Fourth annual
Saturday Shoe lowers Thunder Valley record,
Bazemore and Anderson maintain By Rob Geiger, NHRA.com
U.S. Army racer Tony Schumacher lowered the Bristol Dragway elapsed time record he set yesterday with a stout 4.523-second pass that highlighted the final qualifying session of the O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals presented by Quaker State. Fellow Day 1 leaders Whit Bazemore (4.770) and Greg Anderson (6.790) also remained in control of their respective categories, Funny Car and Pro Stock. This was the first time this season that teammates Schumacher and Bazemore earned the right to start Race Day as odds-on favorites to win the event. For Anderson, it was just another day at the office as he pushed his string of low qualifying efforts to 11 consecutive races. Schumacher took advantage of some late-afternoon cloud cover and lowered his track-record elapsed time for Top Fuel dragsters to 4.523 at 327.66 mph. The U.S. Army driver, who won the 1999 NHRA championship, has just 10 career Budweiser Low Qualifier plaques to his credit, six since crew chief Alan Johnson joined the team last year.
Tony Schumacher "Half my wins and more than half my low qualifiers have been with Alan and that's all happened in the last year," Schumacher said. "He's incredible. Plus, I would bet half the times I ended up runner-up at a race it was against one of Alan's cars.

A wonderful essay by Tim O'Reilly: Piracy is Progressive Taxation, and Other Thoughts on the Evolution of Online Distribution . He makes a very compelling case for the evolution of business models and giving the customer what s/he wants. Totally worth reading to get a deeper understanding of piracy and what's going on with these issues. The comments are worth reading too.
