An Interview with the Creator of Ruby
by Bruce Stewart Ruby has been described as an absolutely pure object-oriented scripting language and a genuine attempt to combine the best of everything in the scripting world. Ruby is written in C, and it was designed with Perl and Python capabilities in mind. While its roots are in Japan, Ruby is slowly but surely gaining ground in the U.S. Yukihiro Matsumoto (or "Matz" as he's known online) is the creator of Ruby and the author of O'Reilly's recently released book on the language, Ruby in a Nutshell Matz is a professional programmer who has worked for the Japanese open source company, netlab.jp. Matz is also known as one of the high-profile open source evangelists in Japan. He's released several open source products, including cmail, an emacs-based, mail-user agent, written entirely in emacs lisp. Ruby is his first piece of software that has become known outside of Japan. We recently spoke to Matz about Ruby's history, the influence Perl and Python had on Ruby, and why the world needs another scripting language.

Why the Left is So Afraid of Bill O'Reilly
by Rachel Alexander
November 2002
O'Reilly's level of popularity on mainstream television frightens the Left, because until now, television viewers had generally been considered their territory. The Right had been relegated to talk radio, small newspapers, and magazines. Then the Internet emerged as a popular forum for news and opinion and along came Fox news. Fox not only rejected the dominant liberal approach of the other networks but told viewers that it was "fair and balanced" news - essentially allowing it to capture vast middle America in addition to the Right wing. The rise of Fox News paved the way for O'Reilly: as people discovered that the major networks - whom they had trusted over the years to be fair arbiters of the news - were all inherently biased, they realized they may as well listen to someone who did not try to mince words or present only one side of the story. O'Reilly's willingness to invite guests on his show whose opinions are diametrically opposed to his, while maintaining a reporter's news presence, is part of the key to his success. Unlike primetime evening news, he fairly includes radical opinions from both the Left and the Right, as well as minority views along the political spectrum. Unlike other political debate shows, he keeps the forum tightly wrapped so the show does not disintegrate into chaos making it difficult to follow or clearly hear any one person speaking. And like the primetime news shows, he covers most of the current and important political issues on each show.

Hugh O'Reilly
Wherever the primate's partisans commanded, the Protestant bishops, ministers, and people were safe, and were even protected in the exercise of their own religious worship. Archbishop O'Reilly was, throughout the war and the terrible years that followed it, the soul and guide of the national party; he did his utmost to restrain the violence of the people, who would have wreaked vengeance on their persecutors had they been left to their own instincts at that crisis. He urged Sir Phelim O'Neile and Lord Iveagh to keep the armed multitudes in check and prevent a massacre and pillage of Protestants . Such salutary restraint produced the most happy results, for even the rudest of the northern chieftains respected him too much to violate his lessons of forbearance and charity. When the great chieftain, Owen Roe, was dying, he had himself taken to Ballinacorgy Castle, the residence of his brother-in-law Philip O'Reilly, where he was attended by Archbishop O'Reilly. Local tradition gives the ruined Abbey of the Holy Trinity, on an island a few miles from Ballinagorgy Castle, as his last resting place. In the same locality Archbishop O'Reilly was buried. The primate's signature is still to be seen in most of the manifestoes of the Confederation of Kilkenny as "Hugo Armacanus". D'Alton, History of Ireland, III (Dublin, 1910); Gilbert, Hist. of the Irish Confederation and the War in Ireland, 1640-41 (7 vols., Dublin, 1882-91).

    An Introduction to Ruby
by Colin Steele Ruby is an object-oriented scripting language that combines the object-oriented programming (OOP) power of Smalltalk with the utility of Perl and the power of Python. I can already hear you grumbling, "Oh, great, another language." Why should you care? You're already up to your elbows in technologies to learn, right? Well, call your significant other and tell him or her you're going to be late tonight. And go get another Jolt. You're going to be hooked on Ruby for the simple reason that Ruby makes programming fun again (and that's what really counts). This article introduces Ruby by examining the high-level properties of the language as well as some important features that distinguish it from other languages. We'll compare Ruby with Perl and Python. Along the way, I'll provide my personal take on Ruby, and why I think you'll love it as much as I do.

Boston , and from 1876 until his death in 1890 he was also part proprietor, being associated with Archbishop Williams of Boston . His books include four volumes of poems: "Songs of the Southern Seas", "Songs, Legends, and Ballads", "The Statues in the Block", and "In Bohemia"; a novel, "Moondyne", based on his Australian experiences; his collaboration in another novel, "The King's Men", and "Athletics and Manly Sport". A sincere Catholic, his great influence, used lavishly in forwarding the interests of younger Catholics destined to special careers, and in lifting up the lowly without regard to any claim but their need, was for twentyyears a valuable factor in Catholic progress in America. He was married in 1872 to Mary Murphy, in Boston , who died in 1897. Their four daughters survive them. The State of the Onion 5
by Simon Cozens July 25, 2001 Larry's State of the Onion presentation this year was, as every year, completely different from previous years. As he noted, previous talks have been about chemistry, theology, biology, and music; this year, for once, Larry actually talked about Perl. And this year the format was rather different. Based on the success of the lightning talks at previous Perl conferences, Larry decided to adopt this for his presentation - he gave us thirty-three lightning talks of fifty-five seconds each, with his daughter Heidi ruthlessly manning the bell. So ruthless, in fact, that Larry had to encourage us to laugh quickly to avoid cutting into his talking time.

Featured Book Better, Faster, Lighter Java In this latest O'Reilly Java book, the authors argue that the old heavyweight architectures, such as WebLogic, JBoss, and WebSphere, are unwieldy, complicated, and contribute to slow and buggy application code. As an alternative means for building applications, the authors present two "lightweight" open source architectures, Hibernate and Spring, that can help you create enterprise applications that are easier to maintain, write, and debug, and are ultimately much faster. The Preface and two Sample Chapters are available free online.
