The Travels of Marco Polo , dictated by Polo several years after his return from decades in the land of Kublai Khan, became an influential book in Renaissance Europe though some publishers were so dubious of the hyperbole that they titled the book, "The Million Lies." The path to Xanadu led to New York via Eugene O'Neill: his Marco Millions opened on Broadway, this day in 1928.

Considered by many to be O'Neill's finest dramatic work, Long Day's Journey into Night is a goldmine for discussion of family dynamics under the strain of illness, unemployment, low self-esteem, and substance abuse. The nuances of these relationships are developed with the deep understanding of personal experience and are to be taken seriously as an opportunity for the health care provider to study them carefully.

Eugene Gladstone O'Neill
Eugene Gladstone O'Neill
Foremost American dramatist and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1936. His masterpiece, Long Day's Journey into Night (produced posthumously 1956), is at the apex of a long string of great plays, including Beyond the Horizon (1920), Anna Christie (1922), Strange Interlude (1928), Ah! Wilderness (1933), and The Iceman Cometh (1946). Early life.
O'Neill was born into the theatre. His father, James O'Neill, was a successful touring actor in the last quarter of the 19th century whose most famous role was that of the Count of Monte Cristo in a stage adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas pere novel. His mother, Ella, accompanied her husband back and forth across the country, settling down only briefly for the birth of her first son, James, Jr., and of Eugene.
Eugene, who was born in a hotel, spent his early childhood in hotel rooms, on trains, and backstage. Although he later deplored the nightmare insecurity of his early years and blamed his father for the difficult, rough-and-tumble life the family leda life that resulted in his mother's drug addictionEugene had the theatre in his blood. He was also, as a child, steeped in the peasant Irish Catholicism of his father and the more genteel, mystical piety of his mother, two influences, often in dramatic conflict, which account for the high sense of drama and the struggle with God and religion that distinguish O'Neill's plays.

Description
This is a volume of specially commissioned essays containing studies of Eugene O’Neill’s life, his intellectual and creative forebears, and his relation to the theatrical world of his creative period, 1916–42. Also included are descriptions of the O’Neill canon and its production history on stage and screen, and a series of essays on ‘special topics’ related to the playwright, such as his treatment of women in the plays, his portrayals of Irish and African Americans, and his attempts to deal in dramatic terms with his parental family culminating in his greatest play, Long Day’s Journey Into Night. One of the essays speaks for those who are critical of O’Neill’s work, and the volume concludes with an essay on O’Neill criticism containing a select bibliography of full-length studies of the playwright’s work.
