Excerpt from the Book "History of Berrien and Van Buren Counties, Michigan: Its Prominent Men and Pioneers"
CHAPTER LXVI. PORTER TOWNSHIP.
By David Schwartz
Boundaries and General Description-Pioneers and Early Settlements-Township Organization. Name, and Civil List-Churches- Schools-Porter Grange, Patrons of Husbandry.
BOUNDARIES AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION.
PORTER , originally attached to Decatur township, covers an area of six miles square, and occupies the southeastern corner of Van Buren County, its boundaties being Antwerp township on the north. Cass County on the south, Kalamazoo County on the east, and Decatur township on the west. Designated in the original survey as town 4 south, range 13 west, it was not named until 1845, when it was set off from Decatur with separate jurisdiction. The surface of the country is generally hilly, and from many of the eminences picturesque views, reaching over a wide extent of territory, may be obtained. In the southeast there is considerable swampland, altlough elsewhere the drainage is good and effective, by means of numerous lakes. The largest of these is Bankson's (or Mack's) Lake, which has an area of about 600 acres. Cedar Lake covers about 5O0 acres, and among the smaller ones may he mentioned Grass, Gravel, Barker's, Van Sickle's, and Hersey. The water in Bankson's Lake is deep and clear, and abounds in fish, having recently been stocked by the State. Gravel Lake has a remarkably fine, hard beach, which admits of a superb roadway around its entire circuit.

Pine Springs Cemetery The following is a listing of the Pine Springs Cemetery located T13S, R15W, Sec7, north of Sulligent, Alabama in Lamar County written by Dorothy Norton Northington. Information contains data taken from the cemetery in addition to personal notes added by the listor. The listing begins on the northeast section with her family and proceeds west. An effort was made to link families. Linking was done to aid persons researching family history. Any omissions or errors in data was not intentional. There are a number of unmarked graves and markers that are not legible. Mrs. Northington stated "There are not adequate words to express the connection with your past when doing a project such as this. As I moved from grave to grave, I remembered so many things that my parents, Jett and Etta Norton, had told me, when I was younger. The experience was overwhelming to say the least. Mount Shasta as a Visual Resource
Early Artists
Mostly limited to artists born before 1900. A list of approximately 175 artists whose artwork depicts Mount Shasta, but does not include photographers. This is an ongoing list updated as of December 1991. Compiled from various sources including auction records, exhibition catalogs, art books, art gallery exhibitions, private collections, etc. Note that Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885), traveling southward as naturalist with the 1841 Wilkes-Emmons overland expedition, lost his sketching materials while crossing the Umpqua Mountains in southern Oregon. No depiction of Mount Shasta by Peale is known to exist. Thus only his fellow expedition members, the world-reknowned geologist James Dwight Dana and the official expedition artist Alfred Thomas Agate, both of whom did sketch Mount Shasta, share the honor of creating the earliest bona-fide pictures of Mount Shasta. Titian Peale, because of his stature as an American artist and his presence at Mount Shasta in 1841, is included in the following list. Adam, William (1846-1931);
