Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche
Nietzsche was born in 1844. His father, a Lutheran minister, died in 1849. He spent his childhood days surrounded by his mother, his sister, and two aunts. After attending a first rate boarding school (Schulpforta), he went on to study classical philology at the universities of Bonn and Leipzig. At 24 years of age, he earned a professorship at Basel, which is where he truly came to be noticed. At Basel, Nietzsche was the younger colleague of Jacob Burckhardt and Franz Overbeck. His relationship with Overbeck solidified with the two becoming lifelong friends and associates. During the Franco-Prussian war, Nietzsche left Basel and volunteered as a medical orderly on active duty. His time in the military was short and he returned to Basel in a state of shattered health. Instead of waiting to heal, he pushed headlong into a more fervent schedule of study than ever before. In 1872, he published his first book: The Birth of Tragedy. Over the following years, he published several more books as well authoring many opinion pieces. In 1879, he resigned from the university because of ill health. His most productive years were after he left Basel, with the culmination of his work (not to mention notoriety) coming with the writing of Thus Spoke Zarathustra. In 1889, less than two weeks after the completion of Nietzsche contra Wagner, he broke down, insane. His madness is suspected to have been a condition brought on by an advancing case of syphilis. Most of his final years were spent in his sister Elisabeth's care. During this time, Elisabeth grew more and more involved in the burgeoning anti-semitic movements in Germany. While he wasted away, she collected and edited many of his scattered notes and tailored them to suit her own political agenda. The fruition of this was Nietzsche's altered works and philosophy being a cornerstone in the Nazi party and Adolf Hitler's personal mantra. In 1900, he died... in 1901, Elisabeth published The Will to Power.

From Thus Spoke Zarathustra: "a book for all and none"
"And who can wholly comprehend how strange man and woman are to each other?" "Everything is in flux." 'The overman is the meaning of the earth." "There is always some madness in love. Bit there is also always some reason in madness." 'Is it my fault that power likes to walk on crooked legs?". "Indeed, you make me laugh , you men of today, and particularly when you are amazed at yourselves. "He who cannot obey himself is commanded". "...where one can no longer love, there one should pass by." "In the end, one experiences only oneself." "To be forsaken is one thing, to be lonely, another." And we should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once." "Woman is not yet capable of friendship: women are still cats and birds. Or at best, cows."

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche German philosopher and poet whose wide-ranging theories of morality and human behaviour have been some of the most influential of the past centuries
Both a philosopher and a poet, who was appointed a professorship at an alarmingly early age. In 1889 he suffered from ill health and resigned from this position after a mental breakdown, from which he never properly recovered. He wrote about many ideas, though the most famous are the avowal of the Superhuman, the doctrine of power, and the dismissal of Christian morality as the morality of a slave.

http://www.cvm.qc.ca/ccollin/portraits/nietzsche.htm

Nietzsche in Turin : An Intimate Biography
by Lesley Chamberlain. British journalist Lesley Chamberlain chronicles the extraordinary year, 1888, during which the expatriate German philosopher wrote three of his greatest works: Twilight of the Idols The Antichrist , and Ecce Homo . More fundamentally, Chamberlain reclaims Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) from cliché, replacing the misogynist, proto-fascist madman of myth with a vulnerable human beingproud, lonely, an avid walker and eaterwho questioned all received wisdom in his effort to give men and women their freedom. Chamberlain's elegant text is passionately personal, buttressed by careful scholarship. She succeeds admirably in her goal "to befriend Nietzsche."...

Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) German philosopher and critic of culture, who influenced a number of the major writers and philosophers of the 20th century Germany and France. Nietzsche's most popular book, Thus Spake Zarathustra (1883-1885), went ignored at the time of its appearance. Full of provocative ideas, Nietzsche was a master of aphoristic form and use of contradictions. Before and after the rise and fall of the Nazis, he was widely misrepresented as an anti-Semite and a woman hater, and many philosophers found it difficult to take his writings seriously. Like the Danish philosopher Kierkegaard (1813-1855), Nietzsche often contradicted himself. "All beings hitherto have created something beyond themselves: and ye want to be the ebb of that great tide, and would rather go back to the beast than surpass man?
What is the ape to man? A laughing-stock, a thing of shame. And just the same shall man be to the Superman: a laughing-stock, a thing of shame.
Ye have made your way from the worm to man, and much within you is still worm. Once were ye apes, and even yet man is more of an ape than any of the apes. "

Born in Prussia, the son of a Luthern minister who died insane four years later, Nietzsche spent the years of chilhood with his mother, sister, and two maiden aunts. In 1858 he he entered boarding school, and in spite of poor health went on to study theology and classical philosophy at the University of Bonn, and then removed to Leipzig, where he became influenced by Kant, Schopenhauer, and the composer Richard Wagner. A year in the army in 1868 was cut short by illness, but his intellectual distinction was such that in 1869 he was appointed to the chair in philosophy at Basel, although at the time he was only 24 years old, and had none of the formal qualifications usually required. In 1879, Nietzsche resigned from the university because of his chronic ill healt, and on a modest pension devoted the rest of his time to writing.
