Edward J. Nichols Collection MS 24
Scope and Content
This collections consists of correspondence, notes, reviews and clippings pertaining to Edward J. Nichols' book Toward Gettysburg, the biography of John Fulton Reynolds (1821-1863) [see also Manuscript Collection 6]. The bulk of the material covers the period from 1954 to 1961. There are no restrictions on the use of the collection by researchers. However, it is the responsibility of the researcher to notify the Archives and Special Collections Department of any intent to publish the contents of the manuscript material and/or other items in the collections.
Provenance
The Edward J. Nichols Collections was donated to the Archives and Special Collections Department on 12 Nov 1986 by Mrs. Nichols. The papers had been in the possession of the family up until the time of the donation to the college.
Biographical Sketch
Edward J. Nichols was born in 1900 in Illinois. He attended the universities of DePauw, Chicago and Columbia; and received his doctorate from the Pennsylvania State University in 1939. His interest in the Civil War was developed early, writing his master's thesis in 1928 on the Civil War soldier and writer Ambrose Bierce. He first became interested in John Fulton Reynolds in the early 1950s. After much searching he found that Reynolds' papers were still in the possession of the family, namely Col. John Fulton Reynolds Scott [the papers are now in the Archives and Special Collections Department of Franklin and Marshall College]. Nichols began the biography of Reynolds in 1953.

Librarian of Congress Names 25 More Films to National Film Registry
Librarian of Congress James H. Billington today announced his annual selection of 25 motion pictures to be added to the National Film Registry. (See attached list.) This group of titles brings the total number of films placed on the Registry to 325. Under the terms of the National Film Preservation Act, each year the Librarian of Congress names 25 "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant motion pictures to the Registry. The list is designed to reflect the full breadth and diversity of America's film heritage, thus increasing public awareness of the richness of American cinema and the need for its preservation. As Dr. Billington said: "Our film heritage is America's living past. It celebrates the creativity and inventiveness of diverse communities and our nation as a whole. By preserving American films, we safeguard a significant element of our cultural history." This year's selections span the 20th century from 1913-1988, and encompass films ranging from Hollywood classics to lesser-known, but still vital, works. Among films named this year:

http://www.progressive.org/nich1000.htm
Behind the DLC Takeover By John Nichols At the national convention of a major political party, an ideologically rigid sectarian clique secures the ultimate triumph. It inserts two of its own as nominees for the Presidency and the Vice Presidency. Heavily financed by the most powerful corporations in the world, the group's leaders gather in a private club fifty-four floors above the convention hall, apart from the delegates of the party they had infiltrated. There, they carefully monitor the convention's acceptance of a platform the organization had drafted almost in its entirety. Then, with the ticket secured and with the policy course of the party set, they introduce a team of 100 shock troops to deploy across the country to lock up the party's grassroots. This is not some fantastic political thriller starring Harrison Ford or Sharon Stone. This is the real-life version of Invasion of the Party Snatchers with the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) burrowing into the pod that is the Democratic Party. Founded in the mid-1980s with essentially the same purpose as the Christian Coalitionto pull a broad political party dramatically to the rightthe DLC has been far more successful than its headline-grabbing Republican counterpart. After Walter Mondale's 1984 defeat at the hands of Ronald Reagan, a group of mostly Southern, conservative Democrats hatched the theory that their party was in trouble because it had grown too sympathetic to the agendas of organized labor, feminists, African Americans, Latinos, gays and lesbians, peace activists, and egalitarians.

Review by Dr. Roberta E. Zlokower
January 10, 2003 In G Major (1975): Music by Maurice Ravel, Choreography by Jerome Robbins, Scenery and Costumes by Erté, Lighting by Ronald Bates, Pianist, Cameron Grant, Performed by Kyra Nichols and Philip Neal and the Company, Conducted by Andrea Quinn. Against a backdrop of an ocean scene, reminiscent of André Derain paintings, with flawless technique, Ms. Nichols, who has been a principal with New York City Ballet since 1979, created a lyrical, poetic, and highly stylized image. Her perfect pointe, her balance, and her persona all blended into this superb and energetic tour de force. Ms. Nichols is in amazing shape and has tremendous charisma as a performer. Mr. Neal was adept at his partnering, but did not seem to have the intensity and focus, so inherent in Ms. Nichols' performance. Ravel's concerto, which contains elements of jazz, was buoyant and bouncy, and Ms. Quinn conducted in a clean, crisp manner. The harp, piano and flute lent a surreal quality to this upbeat score. The Company, in colorfully striped, tank top bathing suits, danced with grace and dynamism.

Mike Nichols and The Business of Living
In Andrew Sarris' fascinating, infuriating (and badly-in-need-of-an-update) manifesto, American Cinema , Mike Nichols was dismissed along with Stanley Kubrick, Richard Lester and Norman Jewsion as a director whose work was less than meets the eye. Like many hot directors in the 1960s, Nichols wore his style on his sleeve. The two films that insured his A-list status, Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? (1966) and The Graduate (1967), gleefully utilised all the toys available to a thirtysomething boy wonder of that period: self-conscious editing and cinematography, stylised production design, hypernaturalistic acting, and a willingness to break down the crumbling dicates of the Hays Code. Until the mid-'70s, Nichols, like many of his peers, embraced the European ideal of the personal filmmaker. He continued to choose projects that gave cinematic expression to a tragicomic sensibility forged in the mid-1950s and early '60s when the director was then best known as one of half of the improvisational duo, Nichols and May.
Then around 1975, Nichols dropped out of the virtual reality of New Hollywood. For almost a decade, he directed plays or executive produced television or film projects. When he returned to feature filmmaking with

Images from the Bangkok International Fashion Fair 2001 Thai fashion is not only about silk. Emerging young designers and a thriving garment industry are turning Bangkok into a hub for hip clothing. Thai designers are earning rave reviews and foreign awards. Meanwhile, the country's famed for its diverse textiles, value and flair for stitching, hence it's a production centre for global names like Calvin Klein, Esprit, Guess, Nautica and Tommy Hilfiger. The 18 th Bangkok International Fashion Fair at BITEC from 15-19 January (public on 18-19 January) is principally for fabric and ready-to-wear garments, though it will emphasise young designers and Thailand's emerging brands, which are key to competing internationally. Tube is one of many couture houses being built from scratch, while new generations are reinvigorating existing boutiques, like Chatree Teng-ha for Kai. Given its depth of talent, Thailand has the potential to be the Italy of Asia.
