John Nichols: One mayor who recognizes the problem
By John Nichols
June 18, 2002 While most of the officials attending the U.S. Conference of Mayors gathering were only too willing to be feted by tobacco giant Philip Morris on Sunday night at the University of Wisconsin Memorial Union, one of the conferees was on the outside with those protesting the closing of the campus building for the corporate luau. Among several hundred protesters peacefully chanting "Who's union? Our union" was Santa Monica Mayor Mike Feinstein. Feinstein, still wearing his official Conference of Mayors name tag, said the marchers were right that corporate sponsors had far too much influence over the agenda of this year's gathering of mayors. "The corporate presence is far greater than is healthy," said Feinstein, who has served as mayor of the California city of 84,000 since 2000, and who has been extremely active in a number of national organizations dealing with municipal issues. "I know people say that the Conference of Mayors needs corporate sponsorships to pay for events like this," Feinstein said. "But that calculation misses the point that many of these corporations are responsible for blocking the agenda that's best for America's cities."

John Nichols - Hinckley's first historian By Hugh Beavin AS A local historian I am fascinated by the study and work of earlier local historians. The first to publish his researches was John Nichols, who was born in Islington in 1745. I find this of particular interest because I came from Bromley, now part of London, and was born around 200 years after John Nichols. History, in part at least, has a way of repeating itself. John was a baker's son but became apprenticed to a printer, William Bowyer. In 1766 he became Bowyer's business partner, marrying Anne Craddock in the same year. In 1776, Anne died and in the following year William Bowyer also died leaving John Nichols as owner of the firm, now located in Red Lion Passage, Fleet Street. In 1778, John married Martha Green, a widow of Hinckley, thus beginning his interest in the history of this area. In the same year that he married Martha, John became joint editor of the Gentleman's Magazine which published articles of antiquarian and historical interest. He frequently contributed articles and in 1782, John produced his "History and Antiquities of Hinckley in Leicestershire". This was the first recorded history of the town and included the earliest known street plan of Hinckley, drawn by John Robinson. John Nichols was generous to his adopted town, presenting St Mary's Church with a picture of the presentation of Christ in the Temple by the Italian 17th century artist Giordano. It is still to be seen in the church today and is, in essence, Hinckley's "old master".

47. Chatter From The Dugout By C. Philip Francis - July 31, 2002

Chatter From The Dugout
Classical Baseball
Was Shakespeare playing the game when not writing?
Bygone Baseball: The unfamiliar, the unusual, the dramatic by C. Philip Francis July 31, 2002 When baseball was becoming a national pastime in the late 1800's the game was populated with raucous, violent, and uncouth players. Mothers did not want their sons to be a baseball player, and fathers cried out "Lock up your daughters, the baseball teams are coming!" But not every player was a rough and tough low-life. Christy Mathewson was tall, blond, a college man, and had a reputation of clean living and honesty. And there were many more that became evangelists, doctors, lawyers, and teachers. Baseball players have not always been the worst in society or the epitome of high morality, but somewhere in between. Recently I received two clippings, one undated, yellowed, obviously printed just before the baseball season, and written by an expert on William Shakespeare. The other regarded the display of baseball cards beside the masterpieces in a Toledo (OH) art museum. Do art and the classics belong with baseball? Maybe so, and these two items might add a little needed class to the game of baseball. Shakespeare and baseball "Kent (OH) (Note: Undated) - Abner Doubleday may be the founder of baseball (sic) but William Shakespeare was penning lines apropos to the game long before the first game in 1839. To help mark the opening of the season next week, D. Louis Marder, Kent State University English professor and editor of the Shakespeare Newsletter, combed the Bard's works to find these descriptions."

Our Sponsors Fair Lawn News Spring 2004 From the December-January 2001 Edition Letters to the Editor Traffic Light at Chandler Drive I have requested that a traffic light be put up on Fair Lawn Avenue and Chandler Drive. Nothing transpired. There are lots of senior citizens in the new Commons Complex and on Chandler Drive. Drivers whiz by with no regard for these people. They rush to get onto Route 208 North. There is an accident waiting to happen and a traffic light at that corner is a must. AOL User River Road Traffic Suggestions Since the River Road Improvement Corporation has been doing its part to improve the River Road area, I would like to suggest some small improvements to the intersections at Berdan and Fair Lawn Aves. At Fair Lawn Ave, I think that a left lane only turn should be painted on the road going southbound on River Road. And has anyone noticed that No Right On Red signs are being ignored? Foot Patrol police or someone should be more vigilant in enforcing this. Will it take an accident and death? Secondly, I think changes should be made in the positioning of "lane signs" at each corner of Berdan and River Road. They are blocked by other signs or trees. At what distance should these signs be clearly seen? The no turn on red signs are not clearly visible, especially, if you are right under them. Isn't there some rule governing their placement as well? I think that the rule of common sense is not being applied.

One day recently I saw a young girl who seemed old enough to know better plucking flowers from one of our bushes from the public walk next to our yard. My wife has worked very hard over the last thirty years to develop a lovely garden and this action really hurt my wife. I must add that this has not happened but a very few times over the years. Imus Watch:
Exposing a Bigot Worse than Dr. Laura
An Interview with Philip Nobile by Jack Nichols
B y any count, Imus in the Morning is the most homophobic broadcast in the history of American media. Every weekday morning between six and ten a.m. the show is simulcast via MSNBC and syndicated CBS radio. When host Don Imus is not talking to celebrity journalists and politicians, he poisons the airwaves with shocking remarks and routinely ridicules minorities, smearing individuals with sexist, racist epithets. Although Imus rides high on the media prairie, he has been slowed down lately by an unusual journalistic enterprise. Philip Nobile, a former investigative reporter for New York, Esquire and the Village Voice , has mounted a one-man, multi-venue campaign to overcome Imus's retro bigotry. Nobile has skewered Imus on radio, TV, print and internet. Thanks to his "Imus Watches," a collection of incriminating transcripts posted on tompaine.com, Imus has been forced to suspend a member of his on-air staff and to promise that he would drop his racist and homophobic shtick. Unfortunately, Imus did not keep his word, and so the struggle to shame him, his bosses and his straight, white entourage goes on. All of Nobile's Imus journalism can be handily retrieved at tompaine.com (search "Imus Index").
