TEXT ONLY CONTEST HISTORY IMPORTANT DATES PRIZES ... UCLA LIBRARY Magical Worlds and Journeys submitted by Mara Grossman, PhD Program; Psychology In the following stories, children find an ancient amulet, befriend fanciful creatures and walk through a looking glass, enabling time to enter worlds which exist in another theme, where animals talk and magic is real. A common theme through other works is the children's ability to exercise power other wise inaccessible to them in the adult-ruled world of their everyday existence. Also, throughout these stories, children experience the negative consequences, as well as the excitement, of such opportunities, as they are challenged to make decisions and protect themselves in worked with parents or guardians to whom they can turn.
Some of the children' adventures are allegorical, others are adventure for adventure's sake, still other s involve real-life consequences; all are wonderful stories and not mere conventions for the teaching of a moral lesson, as many earlier fantasy stories for children haven been characterized. Lastly, these books are united by their ability to retain their magic for me into adulthood.

Nesbit, E[dith]
19 August 1858 - 4 May 1924
British poet, journalist, and short-story writer, perhaps now best-known for her children's books ( The Railway Children and The Wouldbegoods ) and the over-anthologized horror tale "Man-Size in Marble." Also published under the joint pseudonym (with her husband) "Fabian Bland."
Sites: biographical note How can you not love a writer described, by a contemporary, thus: "Mrs. Bland–E. Nesbit–the popular author of "The Would-Be-Good," was always surrounded by adoring young men, dazzled by her vitality, amazing talent and the sheer magnificence of her appearance. She was a very tall woman, built on the grand scale, and on festive occasions wore a trailing gown of peacock blue satin with strings of beads and Indian bangles from wrist to elbow. Madame, as she was always called, smoked incessantly, and her long cigarette holder became an indissoluble part of the picture she suggested–a raffish Rossetti, with a long full throat, and dark luxuriant hair, smoothly parted. She was a wonderful woman, large hearted, amazingly unconventional, but with sudden strange reversions to ultra-respectable standards. Her children’s stories had an immense vogue, and she could write unconcernedly in the midst of a crowd, smoking like a chimney all the while." Edith Nesbit's first great success was The Story of the Treasure-Seekers (1899). Her most celebrated book remains The Railway Children, published in 1906. Her great gift was the ability to create child characters who are real young human beings behaving naturally. Her unhappy marriage gave her much experience with children; as well as bringing up her own four by her philandering husband, she consented to bring Bland's illegimate offspring into her household.

Five Children and More: Edith Nesbit Etexts Author Edith Nesbit led an unconventional life as a prominent socialist and political activist in London. Though she also wrote for an adult audience, she is most remembered as a popular children's author.
Nesbit was born on August 15, 1858, in London, the youngest of six children. After her father died, the family moved to the continent, where she was educated in France and Germany; in 1872 the Nesbits returned to England. She married Hubert Bland in 1880 and had three children; she also adopted Bland's illegitimate children. Bland died in 1914; she later married Thomas Tucker, in 1917.
A founding member of the Fabian Society in the mid-1880s, she was a political activist, along with such other notable literary figures as H. G. Wells and George Bernard Shaw. Nesbit died on May 4, 1924, possibly from lung cancer, at Jesson St. Mary's in Kent, England.
