What is Energy Kid's Corner Milestones Energy Quiz ... About Energy Ant and Us A Report From Energy Ant - How I Spent the Summer of 2001!!! I had a very busy and exciting summer in 2001! I spent two weeks with teachers from across the country learning about energy. The teachers took a number of field trips, so I got to see so much (from an "ant's-eye view," of course). Here are some of the trip highlights:
The National Atomic Museum has great resources and exhibits about the United States' use of nuclear energy for all kinds of things. It is no surprise that the National Atomic Museum is in New Mexico, because this state is also the home of Los Alamos National Laboratory, where the U.S. developed the first nuclear weapon. This museum takes you on a tour through the development of nuclear weapons to today's use of nuclear power - power released from the nucleus of an atom - to generate electricity to heat and cool our homes, make our lamps and home computers work and more. Nuclear power provides many things to the United States and other countries around the world - from nuclear medicine to devices to test bridges for structural integrity - harnessing the power of the atom was one of the biggest discoveries of the last 100 years.

Exhibits include replicas of Little Boy and Fat Man (the bombs dropped on Japan at the end of World War II), and there are children's programs and an exhibit about X-ray technology. The museum plans to mount more exhibits on the nonweapons applications of nuclear technology, such as nuclear medicine and nuclear power. Great places that renew the spirit and remind us why it's so wonderful to live here: A Spectacular Drive - The Turquoise Trail, Hwy. 14 from Santa Fe to I-40
You drive back into New Mexico history, along the Ortiz Mountains as the land stretches into breathtaking vistas. Ranches, old mining towns and geological curiosities of all kinds punctuate a drive that is well worth the extra 30 minutes it takes when you forsake I-25. Stop in Madrid and check out the galleries, great stores, and the hippies. Aren't we glad no one bought the town when it was for sale some years back? History whispers in the rough dirt streets and you catch your breath as you gaze out from this mesa across - Acoma's sacred land. Coronado thought he'd found one of the fabled seven cities of gold when he first saw it. "Too bad he was wrong," one mesa top tour guide opined. "We'd be doing things a lot differently up here." Try to see it on one of the feast days that are open to the public, when the main square fills with dancers and the mood is celebration. Be sure to go back down the steep, ancient footpath that for hundreds of years was the only access.

At the Kirtland Air Force base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Museum will soon be renamed the "National Museum of Nuclear Science and History," so if you want to see it before the change, visit soon.
Largest airborne device (the Mk 17)
Smallest devce (the Davy Crockett)
Though twenty years old this year, the more modern Full Fuzing Option (FFO) B-83. At 2,464 pounds, it could be carried down the street in a pickup truck or Iraqi "technical." (You don't need the casing, just the "physics package.") This is the kind of idea that rightly makes governments nervous. Yield is more than 1 megaton of TNT versus the 13,000 tons of little boy and 18,000 tons of fat man. The world has thousands of similar or better (smaller, lighter) devices in the nuclear-club countries US, France, UK, China, Russian Federation, Israel, South Africa, etc. Something to think about.
This is a very interesting museum and is close to several other museums (New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, Albuquerque Museum, Explora ChildrenÂ’s Museum) if you are in the museum mood. They have every available book on the history and development of the United States' Nuclear Weapons Complex and exhibits ranging from actual Fat Man and Little Boy pumpkins (empty cases)..
