Our Neighbors Visit our neighbors... They are all within walking distance of the Mansion. While in Old Town, you will enjoy walking along narrow streets and down numerous pathways to more than 100 shops, boutiques, galleries and restaurants. Just down San Felipe Street from the Mansion is Albuquerque’s historic Old Town Plaza. Here you will find the charming San Felipe de Neri Church built 75 years before the US was founded. It is surrounded by the picturesque Plaza and gazebo. Also within walking distance from the Mansion, set just on the eastern edge of Old Town, is the Albuquerque Museum. The museum houses the art and history of New Mexico in painting, sculpture and artifacts. Be certain to look for the children and adult workshops. Across the street from Old Town’s neighborhood park, two giant bronze dinosaur sculptures mark the entrance to the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, the state's largest museum. In the museum you will find billions of years of natural history as well as a popular Dynamax Theater. And there is more! Included among attractions within a three mile radius of the Mansion are the Albuquerque Zoo, The BioPark, The National Atomic Museum, and Central Avenue nightclubs and restaurants (old Route 66).

New Mexico's nuclear past By Web or by wheel, aficionados of the Atomic Age can explore our state's vibrant past by cruising the Internet or tooling down to Trinity

Eric Draper /The Associated Press
The toss of a coin kept Leon Smith from boarding the Enola Gay on its infamous flight Aug. 6, 1945, to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. "That's how close I was to the flight that put a virtual end to the war," said the former "weaponeer." Smith was one of the nuclear pioneers who gathered in April 1998 at the National Atomic Museum at Kirtland Air Force Base to talk about the U.S. atomic-bomb testing era. Behind Smith is the museum's replica of the "Fat Man," the second and last atomic bomb used in war, dropped on Nagasaki three days after the Hiroshima mission.
By William C. Reichard
TRIBUNE REPORTER
New Mexico hatched the bomb.
On July 16, 1945, in the desert east of Socorro, the world's first atomic weapon came screaming into the world, accompanied by a flash of light that was seen from Santa Fe to El Paso and a ground-shaking snarl of thunder that shattered windows in Silver City. The site of the explosion had been dubbed Trinity by a physicist recalling a John Donne poem.

Albuquerque is an intriguing combination of old and new, where the glories of nature surround an exciting modern city. It was a once a frontier community and there is still plenty of evidence of this in the Old Town where shops and galleries are housed in historic adobe buildings, set among patios and winding paths. The area is considered to be Albuquerque's soul, at the hub of its history, culture, and community life.
This is also a highly cosmopolitan city boasting diverse cultures and cuisines, pursuits, and panoramas. There are plenty of museums and galleries to visit if you want to stay in town, but a drive along the Crest National Scenic Byway to the summit of the Sandia Mountains is extremely picturesque, as is the breathtaking scenery found in places like the Petroglyph National Monument and Coronado State Monument. You can even walk along the cottonwood-lined river at the Rio Grande Nature Center, where two miles of trails wind through wooded areas to the sandy banks of the Rio Grande River.

It is bordered by the nearly 11,000 foot peaks of the Sandia Mountains to the east and by windswept mesas to the west. The nearly 600,000 inhabitants afford Albuquerque the population to support a large variety of shopping, dining, cultural, and entertainment options. Albuquerque has been listed as one of the best places to live in the United States by Newsweek Money, and Entrepreneur magazines. Founded in 1889, the University of New Mexico (UNM) occupies 600 acres along old Route 66 in the heart of Albuquerque. UNM offers a unique campus environment with a Spanish Pueblo Revival architectural theme. UNM represents a wide cross-section of cultures and backgrounds. Los Alamos, New Mexico
Known as "the hill," Los Alamos produced two bombs. One, nicknamed Little Boy, was a gun-type weapon that used U-235. A slug of U-235 would be projected down a gun barrel into the center of another piece of U-235. When combined, a nuclear explosion would occur. The second bomb, Fat Man, used implosion to detonate plutonium. Here, explosives would surround the plutonium ball. When detonated, they would compress the plutonium, causing a nuclear explosion.
