El Santuario de Chimayo: The Lourdes of America
S omewhere around 1810, a Chimayo friar was performing penances when he saw a light bursting from a hillside. Digging, he found a crucifix, quickly dubbed the miraculous crucifix of Our Lord of Esquipulas. A local priest brought the crucifix to Santa Cruz, but three times it disappeared and was later found back in its hole. By the third time, everyone understood that El Senor de Esquipulas wanted to remain in Chimayo, and so a small chapel was built on the site. Then the miraculous healings began. These grew so numerous that the chapel had to be replaced by the larger, current Chimayo Shrine an adobe mission in 1816. El Santuario de Chimayo is now known (at least locally) as the "Lourdes of America." The crucifix still resides on the chapel alter, but for some reason its curative powers have been overshadowed by El Posito, the "sacred sand pit" from which it sprang, which gapes unheavenly behind the main altar. Over 300,000 people visit this dustbin o' heaven every year. The Prayer Room, which is located in the sacristy of the church (next to the pit), is filled with discarded crutches, braces, and scary, handmade shrines that look more voodoo than Catholic. Also on site here is a restaurant, a burrito stand, and gift shop that sells everything from souvenir T-shirts to refrigerator magnets. But no miracle sand-in-a-bag at least not yet.

Coronado State Monument to the north, a preserved example of the many Pueblo villages that once dotted the banks of the Rio Grande through what is today Albuquerque.
When the Spanish settlers arrived, they too were impressed by the good farming, stable wood supply from the Sandia Mountains and mild climate. After the Spanish returned to Albuquerque following the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, a healthy barter system was established between them and their pueblo neighbors. When the Americans took possession of the New Mexico territory in 1848, U.S. goods and the railroad further established Albuquerque as a major economic hub for the state, as well as the expanding country. During the Civil War, the Confederate flag briefly flew over Albuquerque until the decisive battle at Glorieta Pass northeast of Santa Fe forced the Confederacy to retreat back to Texas.

What's New

Since the 1930s the Rio Grande Valley has been the site of important scientific research. The National Laboratories have drawn scientists and research organizations from all over the world to New Mexico. Here are some pointers to the home pages of scientific organizations in New Mexico. We include some vendors of scientific equipment, software, etc. The Advanced Computing Laboratory maintains a homepage at LANL. The Albuquerque Resource Center (ARC) supports high performance computing for a diverse community, including the Department of Defense and Department of Energy research labs, graduate and undergraduate educational and research institutions, and leading-edge commercial users. The ARC is one of two components of the High Performance Computing and Research Center at the University of New Mexico. The Alliance for Photonic Technology The Apache Point Observatory consists of The Astrophysical Research Consortium's 3.5-meter telescope, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey 2.5-m telescope with 0.6-m sky monitor telescope, and New Mexico State University's 1.0-m telescope. The latter three are under construction. This page has a lot of information of interest to amateur astronomers, including images of the notorious Hale-Bopp Comet .
