Important Machinist Biographies
The following biographies discuss some of the world's greatest machinists. As you can tell from reading them, many of these machiist's knew each other and probably benefited from each other's knowledge and ideas. I also present a chart of these men's relationships which illustrates this idea grpahically.
BENTHAM
'General' Bentham, was responsible for the construction and supervision of H.M. Dockyards. Perhaps the most important of these was, at the time of publication 1877, situated at Chatham "where every item of turnery, etc. is performed for the Navy, from boring the chamber of a pump to the turning of a button for a chest of drawers". It was at Chatham that Brunel's remarkable block making machinery was set up under Bentham's direction. A second set was also installed in Portsmouth Dockyard. The plant at Chatham, however, was never used since Portsmouth could supply all the blocks that the Navy required.
BRAMAH, Joseph, 1748 - 1814
Joseph Bramah was born at Stamborough in Yorkshire on April 1 3th 1749. When he was about sixteen he was incapacitated by an injury to his ankle and so was unable to follow his intended employment as an agricultural labourer.

Nairn, William
- Date of death not recorded; buried Rose Hill, Sec. D, Chicago, IL by the Illinois St. Andrew Society. Nairne, Thomas - In the early 1700's, he seemed to have achieved some success in pacifying discontented tribes on the extreme southern edge of the Carolina settlement. He was involved in parleys with the Yamasee Indians at Pocotaligo on April 15, 1715 when news of the outbreak of the Southern Indian War reached the conference. He was seized and died at the stake after being tortured for several days.1 Naismith, James (Dr.) - (1861-1939) - The inventor of basketball, he was a Scottish-Canadian who was educated by a Presbyterian minister. He devised the game as a winter sport in 1891 while working at a college in Springfield, Massachusetts, as a physical education instructor.14 Naper, Capt. Joseph - for whom Naperville was named, was a prominent citizen of Scottish Descent. Napier, Charles (Sir) - Admiral and native of Sterlingshire who commanded the British naval fores in the Baltic during the Crimean War.14 Napier, David

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) schuf z.B.

The Newcomen and Watt Steam Engines
Thomas Newcomen (1663-1729) was an English blacksmith, who invented an atmospheric engine. Steam was admitted to a cylinder, condensed by a jet of cold water, and the vacuum created on the inside of the cylinder allowed atmospheric pressure to operate a piston, which was forced downward on its working stroke. In partnership with Thomas Savery who had patented a steam pump along similar lines in 1698, Newcomen and his other partner, John Calley, built their first engine on the site of a water-filled mine shaft in 1712. Newcomen engines were slow and inefficient, but they were better than any other device yet invented for pumping water out of mines.
The Steam Locomotive and the Steamboat
Watt's patent for the separate condenser covered the use of high pressure steam, but since he was fearful of boiler explosions and bursting pipes he refused to develop such an engine. He even went so far as to suppress the working model of a high pressure engine, made by his assistant William Murdock in 1785. When Watt's patent expired in 1800, there were other inventors in England and America who advocated the use of high pressure steam. Richard Trevithick (1771-1833) had gained his experience around steam engines in the Cornish mines. By 1801, he had perfected his designs for a cylindrical boiler and high pressure engine and built several full size steam carriages which were patented and run on the English roads. During the first decade of the l9th Century, he built several more steam carriages, known as locomotives, which were used for hauling coal and ore out of the mines.

57. Scientists In Lambeth

Scientists in Lambeth
This article appeared in the Vauxhall Society's Newsletter April 1975 The visitor was none other than Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), the American statesman and inventor, whose interest in electricity and magnetism led him to invent the lightning conductor. He invented a smoke-consuming stove and also studied the purification of the air by means of plants, the origin of coal, and the properties of the Gulf Stream. Whilst travelling to England in 1757 he noted the calming effect of fat poured on the sea and recalled the libations to the gods which the ancients had made in stormy seas. Later he was to demonstrate on Clapham pond the effect of a 'mono-molecular film' in reducing the disturbance caused by wind over the surface of water. Henry Cavendish (173l-l8l0) who lived in Clapham, was immensely wealthy, a misogynist and recluse, but managed also to be outstanding as a chemist, physicist, biologist, and astronomer. His greatest achievement was the measurement of the weight of the Earth, a feat which he accomplished with amazing accuracy at his home in Clapham, and from which he then proceeded to weigh the Sun, Moon and planets. John Rennie (1761-1821), a friend of James Watt, was an engineer and bridge builder. His first major achievement was the building of the Albion Mills on the South Bank near Waterloo. In 1784 he built the double-action steam engine: he produced pumping machinery to drain the fens and built the Kennet and Avon canal. He also provided stamping machinery for the Royal Mint at Tower Hill and for the mints at Bombay and Calcutta. His main interest was in the science of materials and he was the first fully to exploit the strength of cast iron in bridge building. He built London Bridge and the first Waterloo Bridge, together with Southwark Bridge which survives to this day, and was the first to employ coffer dams in bridge building. He was largely responsible for the building of the Thames embankment but died almost penniless.

Indian Institute of Astrophysics
Koramangala, Bangaore 500 034, India (Paper presented at UN sponsored meeting in Bonn Germany Sep 1996) Historical Perspective About 200 years ago. a 9.5 cm aperture telescope was called a large telescope. London was then the centre of the world optical trade with John Dollond (1706-61), his son-in-law Jess Ransden (d.1800) and son Peter Dollond (d.1820) as the leading telescope makers. At that time, it was not possible to make good quality flint glass blanks of larger size, and the lenses were ground by trial and error. Credit for providing a scientific basis for optical engineering as well as for making large sized lens telescopes goes to Munich based Joseph Fraunhofer (1787-1826), who started his career as an 11 year old orphan in virtual bondage at an optics shop and rose to such eminence that on his death he received a state funeral. Originally, reflecting telescopes were made from the unwieldy speculum metal, an alloy of copper and tin. The invention, in 1856, of the silver-on-glass technique by the chemist Justus von Liebig (1803-1873) in a different context made it possible to make large, low-weight astronomical mirrors. the problem of casting strong mechanical mountings suitable for large telescopes was solved by the use of the steam hammer invented by James Nasmyth (1808-1890).
