Seetha Narayanan Family circumstances interrupted her music education.However,within an year of moving to Madras  she had qualified as a radio artist both in Carnatic music and Hindi bhajans. Narayanan as Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research is a part of the HRD Ministry's scheme to saffronise the agenda in academia. THE tenure of the Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) would have expired only in July 2004, but the Union government, specifically the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD), hastened the departure from the Council of M.G.S Narayanan, the incumbent, seven months in advance. On December 10, Narayanan, who was away in Kozhikode, Kerala, was informed by his personal secretary that the government had decided to withdraw his nomination as Chairman with immediate effect. IN the midst of a raging academic debate on the rewriting and review of Indian history, M.G.S. Narayanan, Chairperson of the Indian Council of Historical Research and an eminent historian, wrote in his column in the ICHR newsletter of January-June, 2002 that it was fortunate that "a growing number of historians in India, especially among the younger generation, refuse to hold any philosophy or ideology of history, be it imperialist, nationalist or Marxist, as the last word, the final truth." He added that "certain historians professing the Marxist ideology have been in the habit of claiming infallibility and monopoly of wisdom, branding all other historians as reactionary and communal and treating them as untouchables. Contact Us The making of a play The humour that sparks her plays is very much a part of her too, discovers SHREEKUMAR VARMA after a conversation with musician and playwright Anushka Ravishankar It was an amazing evening of two very different plays, “Do You Love Me?” and “The Cockroach Collector”, both written by Anushka Ravishankar. The first, replete with popular music and dance, interspersing serious and frivolous questions on love, life and marriage, was directed by veteran stage director and actress Bhagirathi Narayanan. Dancers danced in, colourfully accentuating the actor's punch-lines, gyrating to the tunes of Hindi, Tamil and English songs. Among the dancers, Aparna Gopinath was lively, pulled and breezed by the music. Bala as the youngster wooing himself into marriage with his stark one-liners took the audience with him. So did Amrita with her energy. Bhagyam's direction of a difficult play - a series of live tableaux, in fact - reflected her experience and high enthusiasm. The action flowed seamlessly, throwing up whimsical eternal questions in the air like a juggler's colourful balls. The second, a bizarre ‘internal’ play about the quality of violence, had Anushka marking her debut as director. Her first produced play, ‘Phoenix’, was staged in Bangalore to great applause earlier this year as part of a festival. She’s already an award-winning writer of children’s books. Wearing these different-sized shoes, did she find it difficult to keep walking? She looks serious most of the time, but the humour that sparks her plays is very much a part of her too.

Two major analytical techniques are used: fluorescence spectroscopy and capillary electrophoresis (CE). Our fluorescence spectroscopy research efforts are focused on the longer wavelength region of the electromagnetic spectrum, the near-infrared (NIR) region. The NIR region is advantageous due to the inherent low interference and the high molar absorptivities of the NIR absorbing chromophores. When NIR spectroscopy is coupled with the use of semiconductor lasers and detectors, an especially useful technique emerges. Semiconductor lasers have all the properties of other types of lasers with the added benefits of compactness, lower power consumption and low cost. We are currently studying several bioanalytical applications. These include, but are not limited to, NIR DNA sequencing; NIR fluorescence immunoassays, including fiber optic and conventional applications; DNA probe techniques; pH, metal ion and hydrophobicity determinations. Additionally, new environmentally important NIR analytical techniques are studied in our research group, including separation and bioremediation applications. Another component of our studies is the development of new biosensors using fiber optic techniques. Our CE research is mainly focused on new high sensitivity detection methods, bioseparations and NIR labeling techniques.
