Woooah. Slow down there a little, overly inquisitive one. If you haven't noticed already, there have been a bunch of changes around these parts. Please update your links, bookmarks, and the way you've seen me all along. If you have no clue as to why you're here, close the stupid browser window now. Go out. Take a walk. Get a life. You'll thank me for being so rude someday. For those who've decided they need this more than a walk outside, you have some choices to make.

Abhinaya in Full Bloom
Padma Bhushan Smt.Kalanidhi Narayanan and Sangeeth Natak Akademi Award winner Smt. Rohini Bhate, Bharatanatyam and Kathak maestros, came together for a programme, 'ABHINAYA SANGAM', at Sri Krishnan Gana Sabha, Chennai. They performed separately, but chose the same mood or situation to demonstrate in their own dance styles. Both artists started with invocations to Lord Ganesha. The next was a slokha by Sankaracharya 'Shive Shringaradhara'. The navarasas were depicted through Parvathi, as in her relationships with Shiva, other men, her friends, Ganga etc. The nuances are so understated in kathak that it is easy to miss them altogether. "Unnai thoothu annipinanae" in Saveri, a composition of Ganam Krishna Iyer, was taken up by Smt. Kalanidhi. The dancer portrays the confusion and pain of the nayika at the betrayal of her own friend with Lord Guha. The Vartamanagupta nayika (one who is unfaithful) was portrayed by Smt.Bhate in poet Vidyapathi's 'Saroopa niroopaha dose' set to raag desh. The nayika tries to cover her guilt while explaining her dihevelled state when she returns home. She gives seemingly innocent explanations for her late return, for the red mark on her face, for her torn clothes, for her being out of breath. Smt.Bhate performed this in a seated posture on stage. Nevertheless, the portrayal was very vivid and entertaining. A mugdha nayika is one who is young and innocent. Smt.Kalanidhi demonstrated a situation where the nayika has just spent the night with Krishna and is unwilling to go back again to him. The delicacy of expression and the art of communication without so much as a movement of the eyes made this probably one of the highest moments of the evening. The padam set to Mohanam is a composition of Sarangapani.

After completing my Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley , I work on the language learning project NTL (previously called Lzero), at the International Computer Science Institute . For a brief period, I worked at the Artificial Intelligence Lab at SRI International. My SRI homepage describes projects that apply aspects of NTL theory to System Building. For an overview of the NTL/Lzero project, see "Lzero: The First Five Years"
Research interests:
Probabilistic models of language interpretation, graphical models of stochastic grammars, semantics of linguistic aspect, on-line metaphor interpretation, embodied rationality. More recently, I have been building models investigating the role of sub-cortical structures (like the basal ganglia-cortex loops) in attentional control.

Read online (27 pages) Random excerpt: ites and marital, paternal, filial and fraternal relationships are guided by the quantum of money inflow. Here, in this era, man would do anything for handful of money because money is power. Man derives all pleasures, respect, opportunities, and even a ticket to contest elections as candidate of a popular political party, get through it and reach positions on the top rung of political ladder by mere might of money. When the moneyed scoop all the fortunes on earth, the poor can only gaze agape at them, with a sigh. The moneyed may be able to buy everything on earth, but not love. To exploit and live under his opulence, even distant relations and kith around him will pretend to love him. He will live in a fool's paradise believing that all of them really care for him, until the day his last pie is drained off and the love, sincerity and the loyalty of this so-called kith and kin are put to the acid test. Even after knowing the occult deceptive function of it, man stakes his life in the gra

Arun's Travel Pages - Photos of Europe
This site contain hundreds of original photographs captured on my Sony Mavica FD71 during my visits to Switzerland, Italy, Germany and France. In Switzerland I spent most of my time at Geneva that houses a lot of UN buildings. I also visited the Olympic Museum at Lausanne, the snow clad Alps and wonderful locales such as Interlaken, Jungfrau and Grindelwald. Switzerland boasts of some of the most beautiful locales in the whole planet. In France I was mostly confined to Paris. Paris offered a blend of ancient and modern structures ranging from the fascinating Louvre Museum to the modern day wonder called the Eiffel Tower. Italy is famous for it's architectural splendors. Rome is full of superb architectural masterpieces, thanks to great men like Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci. The leaning tower at Pisa is indeed a real wonder. The holy city of Vatican is a must see. But the one place that fascinated me the most was the sinking city of Venice. The city is literally drenched in water. In this dream city you will find that roadways have been replaced with waterways, buses with boats and bus stops with boat stops! I had the opportunity to visit a quite village called Alfdorf in the outskirts of Stuttgart. The natural and simplistic beauty that this small village had to offer left me with an urge to see more of Germany.
