Sarojini Naidu (1879-1949) K nown as cuckoo of India, Sarojini Devi was a distinguished poet, renowned freedom fighter and one of the great orators of her time. Her father Aghoranath Chattopadhyaya was a good scholar of Sanskrit, Greek, Hebrew, Persian and English. He was principal of Nizam's college at Hyderabad, now capital of Andhra Pradesh. Sarojini's mother Varadasundari Devi wrote poetry in Bengali and knew Sanskrit. Sarojini was the eldest among their eight children. All the children grew learning and speaking besides Bengali, their mother-tongue, Urdu, Telugu and English. One of her brothers Birendranath was a revolutionary and spent his life outside India all the time for fear of getting extradited for sedition and black waters. Other brother Harindranath was a poet, dramatist and actor. Nizam's Hyderabad at that time had made no progress in women's education. Hence Sarojini was sent to Madras for schooling. She topped the matriculation examination at the age of twelve, raising innumerable eyebrows. Women's college eagerly awaited for her entry but she returned to Hyderabad due to frail health. She had started writing poetry in English by then, and the Nizam, very much impressed by her brilliance offered her a scholarship to study in England. She did not appreciate the stiff and mechanical life in the British university (Cambridge). Her health was also delicate and had to bid goodbye to higher education. But she undertook journey through entire Europe, read art books and continued writing poetry. She met English authors Arthur Simon and Edmond Gausse. It was Gausse who convinced Sarojini to stick to Indian themesIndia's great mountains, rivers, temples, social milieu, to express her poetry. "To be a genuine Indian poet of Deccan, not a clever machine-made imitator of the English classics" as was the trend. He helped to bloom her poetic talent. "The golden threshold (1905)", "The bird of time (1912)", and "The broken wing (1912)" were the collections which attracted huge Indian and English readership.

ECSTASY by: Sarojini Naidu (1879-1949)
    OVER mine eyes, O my Love!
    Mine eyes that are weary of bliss
    As of light that is poignant and strong
    O silence my lips with a kiss,
    My lips that are weary of song!
    Shelter my soul, O my love!
    My soul is bent low with the pain
    And the burden of love, like the grace
    Of a flower that is smitten with rain:
    O shelter my soul from thy face!

SUTTEE by: Sarojini Naidu (1879-1949)
    AMP of my life, the lips of Death
    Hath blown thee out with their sudden breath;
    Naught shall revive thy vanished spark . . .
    Love, must I dwell in the living dark?
    Tree of my life, Death's cruel foot
    Hath crushed thee down to thy hidden root;
    Nought shall restore thy glory fled . . .
    Shall the blossom live when the tree is dead?
    Life of my life, Death's bitter sword
    Hath severed us like a broken word,
    Rent us in twain who are but one . .
    Shall the flesh survive when the soul is gone?

INDIAN LOVE-SONG by: Sarojini Naidu (1879-1949) SHE
    IKE a serpent to the calling voice of flutes,
    Glides my heart into thy fingers, O my Love!
    Where the night-wind, like a lover, leans above
    His jasmine-gardens and sirisha-bowers;
    And on ripe boughs of many-coloured fruits
    Bright parrots cluster like vermilion flowers.
HE
    Like the perfume in the petals of a rose,
    Hides thy heart within my bosom, O my love!
    Like a garland, like a jewel, like a dove
    That hangs its nest in the asoka-tree.
    Lie still, O love, until the morning sows
    Her tents of gold on fields of ivory.

THE INDIAN GYPSY by: Sarojini Naidu (1879-1949)
    N tattered robes that hoard a glittering trace
    Of bygone colours, broidered to the knee,
    Behold her, daughter of a wandering race,
    Tameless, with the bold falcon's agile grace,
    And the lithe tiger's sinuous majesty.
    With frugal skill her simple wants she tends,
    She folds her tawny heifers and her sheep
    On lonely meadows when the daylight ends,
    Ere the quick night upon her flock descends
    Like a black panther from the caves of sleep.
    Time's river winds in foaming centuries
    Its changing, swift, irrevocable course
    To far off and incalculable seas; She is twin-born with primal mysteries, And drinks of life at Time's forgotten source.

Sarojinidevi was a great patriot, politician, orator and administrator, of all the famous women of India, Mrs. Sarojinidevi Naidu's name is at the top. Not only that, but she was truly one of the jewels of the world. Being one of the most famous heroines of the 20th century, her birthday is celebrated as "Women's Day"
    She was born on February 13, 1879 in Hyderabad. Her father, Dr. Aghornath Chattopadhyaya, was the founder of Nizam College of Hyderabad and a scientist. Her mother, Mrs. Varasundari, was a Bengali poetess. Sarojinidevi inherited qualities from both her father and mother.
    Young Sarojini was a very bright and proud girl. Her father aspired for her to become a mathematician or scientist, but she loved poetry from a very early age. Once she was working on an algebra problem, and when she couldn't find the solution she decided to take a break, and in the same book she wrote her first inspired poetry. She got so enthused by this that she wrote "The Lady of the Lake", a poem 1300 lines long. When her father saw that she was more interested in poetry than mathematics or science, he decided to encourage her. With her father's support, she wrote the play "Maher Muneer" in the Persian language. Dr. Chattopadhyaya distributed some copies among his friends and sent one copy to the Nawab of Hyderabad. Reading a beautiful play written by a young girl, the Nizam was very impressed. The college gave her a scholarship to study abroad. At the age of 16 she got admitted to King's College of England. There she met famous laureates of the time.

Sarojini, who called herself s "poetess-singer" was born in Hyderabad on February 13, 1879. She was the eldest daughter of a remarkable scientist - philosopher father, Aghornath Chattopadhyaya and the gentle poetess mother, Barada Sundari Devi.. From 1917 to 1919, Sarojini was involved in the most dynamic phase of public life of her career, campaigned for the Montagu Chelmsford Reforms, the Khilafat issue, the Rowlatt or "Black Bills", the Sabarmati Pact and the Satyagraha Pledge and was Gandhiji's most faithful lieutenant when he launched the Civil Disobedience Movement on April 6, 1919. With great courage she quelled the riots, sold proscribed literature and addressed frenzied meetings on Jallianwala Bagh and martial law in Amritsar. Sarojini returned the Kaiser i Hind medal to the Government, led a deputation to Montagu, Secretary of State for India, and fought for the rights of women. She sailed for England in 1919 as a member of the all India Home Rule Deputation and led a powerful agitation in England against sex-discrimination. During the Bardoli campaign she sent a stirring message on the unity of India when Gandhiji suspended the C. D. movement after the Chauri Chaura incident. After the great trial of Gandhiji in 1922 Sarojini gave up her luxurious silks in favour of Khadi.
