full text Sunday, 12th December 1999 Biography Mihai Nadin: Study from Brasov (Capital city, Romania) to Bucharest (Dr. Ing., Dr. phil., Dr. phil. habil), Salzburg (Alumnus), München (Dr. phil. habil), Providence (new development in the area of Computer Graphics), Baltimore (neuron nets). Work in teaching and research: Unverasity of Brasov, University of Bucharest, , Carolo-Wilhelmina University, Braunschweig, Ludwig Maximilian Universität München, Universität, Gesamthochschule Essen, Rhode Island, School of Design, Centro Internazionale di Semiotica e di Linguistica Urbino, Rochester, Institute of Technology, Brown University, Ohio State University, FIT New York. Since 1994 Professor at Bergische Universität-Gesamthochschule Wuppertal in Germany. Nadin’s professional development integrates science, technology, and humanities. His post-doctoral dissertation, Sign and Value (Munich, 1980), is a semiotically based investigation of the cognitive and sign (semiotic) processes that facilitate human interaction. In MINDAnticipation and Chaos (1991), Nadin ascertains that the mind exist only in relation to other minds, and that mind activity is anticipatory in nature. The Civilization of Illiteracy, Nadin’s most recent book, addresses the causes making the digital revolution possible and necessary. It also suggests means and methods for a new type of education and for a new economic and political focus corresponding to multimedia interaction in a global, networked society.

Project Gutenberg is the Internet's oldest producer of FREE electronic books (eBooks or eTexts).
Project Gutenberg is the brainchild of Michael Hart, who in 1971 decided that it would be a really good idea if lots of famous and important texts were freely available to everyone in the world. Since then, he has been joined by hundreds of volunteers who share his vision.
Now, more than thirty years later, Project Gutenberg has the following figures (as of November 8th 2002): 203 New eBooks released during October 2002, 1975 New eBooks produced in 2002 (they were 1240 in 2001) for a total of 6267 Total Project Gutenberg eBooks. 119 eBooks have been posted so far by Project Gutenberg of Australia.

"REACTION WILL NOT DO. THE CAUSE LIES IN THE FUTURE." Since the time of Descartes and Newton, determinism was the paradigm of science. Determinism says that an effect is the result of a prior cause. The method called reductionism dividing the subject of study into manageable units presented a comfortable tool for addressing the physical world. For the last 400 years, scientists accomplished amazing feats based on the action-reaction paradigm implicit in determinism. Today, many scientists realize that the proactive is at least as important as the appropriate reaction to the many problems we face. The proactive is reflective of anticipation, a characteristic of the living. In an anticipatory system, not only the past affects the state of the system, but also its future. The very complex informational processes of causation propagation from the future (seen as possibilities) to the present deserve our attention no less than the mechanisms embedded in the deterministic model. Literacy and illiteracy are no longer what they used to be. This is basically the conclusion of Mihai Nadin in his Civilization of Illiteracy . Nadin traverses over a few thousand years of the history of literacy, but the bulk of his attention is turned toward the contemporary. Now, he writes, we are witnessing the proliferation of literacies and multiplication of media on a scale that makes notions of a single form of literacy seem like a quaint dream of the past.
