Dow Marmur
What Noah is to humanity, Abraham is to the Jewish people. Both were destined to initiate something new: Noah became the ancestor of a renewed humankind; Abraham revolutionized faith by relating to God in a new way. As human beings, we look to Noah-the second Adam-and his family for our origins; as Jews, we are the descendants of Abraham and Sarah. Noah is our human ancestor, but Abraham is our Jewish role model. That our Jewish descent is not a matter of biology is attested to by the fact that every Jew-by-choice is to be called "son/daughter of Abraham and Sarah." All people are the children of Noah, but only Jews are the descendants of Abraham. The similarities between Noah and Abraham also point to differences between the two. Thus we are told in the very first verse of the parashah, Et ha'Elohim hithalech No'ach , "Noah walked with God." (Genesis 6:9) Later in Genesis (24:40), Abraham says about himself

CYCLE TWO THE TEXT

"God said to Abram, "Go forth from your native land and from your father's house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, And I will bless you; I will make your name great, And you shall be a blessing. (Genesis 12:1-2) EXPLANATION
In this week's parasha , God speaks directly to Abram, later known as Abraham, and instructs him to leave his native land of Haran, and leave his father's house to go to an unnamed destination, a land that God will show him. If Abram obeys God's commandment, God promises to make him the father of a great nation, to bless him, and to make him famous. INTERPRETATION
There are many questions about this portion that have perplexed students of Torah for thousands of years. Why did God choose Abram? What had Abram done to deserve to become the father of the Jewish people? While there are very few clues in the Torah itself, there have been many stories and legends about Abram passed down through the generations. There were ten generations from Noah to Abraham, and in all of these, God spoke to only one of their number, to Abraham. Rabbi Berekhiah taught in the name of R. Nehemiah: God's sifting through the generations until he found Abraham may be illustrated by the parable of a king who while traversing from place to place, lost a pearl from the crown on his head. The king halted and had his retinue halt. The king heaped the soil in a number of piles, brought sieves, and sifted the first pile, but did not find the pearl; he sifted the second, but did not find it; but when he sifted the third pile, he found it. Then a passerby said, "The king has finally found his precious pearl." (Neh.9:7-8)

CYCLE FIVE THE TEXT
THE CONTEXT

Rashi, the Commentator of commentators, was a master of putting Torah in context. We will honor his teaching as we try to do the same. Paradoxically, the parashah called Chayei Sarah THE THEME
Each week we will select one theme from the parashah that is directly relevant to our lives. It is only 30 years since the first woman rabbi was ordained, and in the ensuing decades women have increasingly exercised their rights and powers to study and comment on the text. How fortunate we are that the voices of women, the daughters of Sarah, are no longer hidden. A SAGE SPEAKS
Each week we will learn from a Talmid Chacham - a disciple of the wise. There are several midrashim that suggest that we hear of Sarah’s death in connection with her lifetime because her years were truly filled with life and that this is one of the reasons why the Hebrew text expresses her life span of 127 years in an unusually extended fashion as 100 years and 20 years and 7 years. Why does the Torah split up the tally of her years into three parts ("one hundred years," "twenty years" and "seven years")?
  • At the age of twenty she was like age seven in beauty, and at the age of one hundred she was like age twenty in piety. (Rashi; Midrash Rabbah)
