John Muir, Naturalist
"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The Winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn." John Muir On April 21, 1838, John Muir, one of the world's greatest naturalists, was born. Muir emigrated from Scotland to America in 1849. During his life, Muir was a farmer, inventor, wanderer, writer, conservationist, explorer, aidvisor to presidents, and above all, a naturalist. President Theodore Roosevelt once called him "an emphatically good citizen." From an early age, Muir loved the outdoors, but hard work gave him little opportunity to spend much time in the natural world. A serious injury at the age of 29 caused Muir to turn to nature. He walked a thousand miles from the Midwest to the Gulf of Mexico. From there, he sailed, walked and rode through much of Central America and California. Ultimately, it was the Sierra Nevada and Yosemite that became his spiritual home. He once called the Sierra "the most divinely beautiful of all the mountain chains I have ever seen." Throughout his life, Muir traveled and wrote extensively on what he saw. His focus was not just on the beauty of the wonderful places he visited, but also on the risk of their destruction. A series of articles pointed out the losses caused by unrestrained grazing, logging and overuse.

(1838- 1914 ). At the age of eleven Muir emigrated to the USA, and after a lifetime spent travelling throughout North America studying the land and its natural life, he became the leading campaigner for the establishment of National Parks such as Yosemite in California. He has become a legend in the USA and the extent of his legacy is now recognised worldwide. The Award aims to encourage an interest among all age groups in Discovery, Exploration and Conservation of wild places, and has three levels named after each of these
themes.

John Muir was born in Dunbar in 1838. At the age of eleven he travelled, with his family, to America, where they set up a home at Fountain Lake, Wisconsin. His life is beautifully summed up in this memorial to him, found at Fountain Lake's John Muir Memorial Park. "He came to America as a lad of eleven, spent his 'teen years in hard work clearing the farm across this lake, carving out a home in the wilderness. In the 'sunny woods, overlooking a lake rimmed with water lilies', he found an environment that fanned the fire of his zeal and love for all nature, which, as a man, drove him to study, afoot, alone and unafraid, the forests, mountains and glaciers of the west, to become the most rugged, fervent naturalist America has produced and the father of the National Parks of our country." John Muir was a prolific writer. His quotations are as relevant today as they were when he wrote them. Here are some that may offer inspiration as you set out to achieve the John Muir Award.

John Muir - "Travels in Alaska"
JOHN MUIR (1838 - 1914) JOHN MUIR, naturalist, is widely regarded as the "Father of the National Parks Movement." He loved to "go to wild places" and experience the wonders of nature. Alaska, like Yosemite in California, was one of Muir's favorite places. Alaska is where Muir came to visit unspoiled wilderness. His novel theories on glacial sculpting of the landscape ultimately proved to be true. Muir's first of seven trips to Alaska in 1879 was highly eventful. Traveling in a dugout canoe with Tlingit Indian guides, he mapped Glacier Bay for the U.S. Government documenting its existence, and he co-founded the town of Haines with traveling companion Presbyterian missionary S.Hall Young. The City of Haines recently became sister cities with Dunbar, Scotland, Muir's birthplace. Inspired by memories of his boyhood home in Dunbar, Scotland, his experiences in his adopted home of North America, and his extensive travels in Africa, Alaska, Australia, Canada, China, Japan, India, Central and South America, Russia and New Zealand, John Muir ultimately became the archetypal global citizen and a man for all ages.

John Muir, 1838 - 1914
John Muir was a botanist, mountaineer, glaciologist, ecologist, naturalist, and conservationist whose views were closely aligned with American Transcendentalism . Influenced heavily by the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau , he shared their regard for the unity, order, and harmony of nature, their trust in nature's power to illuminate the higher laws of the mind, and their pantheistic approach to imagination and transcendence. Although their ideas were by no means the same as his, Muir devotedly carried and marked copies of Emerson's and Thoreau's works on his hikes and climbs in the Sierra Nevada and elsewhere in the west. In May 1871, Emerson visited Muir at Yosemite in California and the pair quickly became friends. Emerson admiringly listed him in his journal along with Thomas Carlyle , Thoreau, and several others, among those he called "My men."

    Foreword
    Introduction to the Walk
    About Dunbar's John Muir Association
When we contemplate the whole globe as one great dewdrop, striped and dotted with continents and islands, flying through space with the other stars, all singing and shining together as one, the whole universe appears as an infinite storm of beauty. Dunbar is the birthplace of John Muir (1838 - 1914); inventor, naturalist, explorer, mountaineer, farmer, geologist, writer, he was above all a pioneer of nature conservation. John Muir emigrated to Wisconsin in the United States of America at the age of eleven. He settled in California in his mature years, after a period of travel and exploration. There he played a crucial role in creating Yosemite National Park. He fought to save the Giant Redwood trees of California and the forests and alpine meadows of the Sierra Nevada from foresters and graziers. He was a founder of the Sierra Club in 1892 and the first President. Now it is the premier conservation body in California. From this position, his writing challenged Establishment figures of the United States to act positively in the emergent conservation debate of the late nineteenth century. One of his greatest achievements was to convert President Theodore Roosevelt to the idea of creating National Parks - the first such system in the world. But for all his contact with the great and the powerful, Muir never lost touch with the common man and with children - the future inheritors of his beloved wilderness. As a result of his lifelong struggle on behalf of wild places and wildlife, Americans honour Muir as 'The Father of Our National Parks'. For many millions of Californians, John Muir is regarded in the same light as Abraham Lincoln or Andrew Carnegie, and his writings are as celebrated as those of Robert Burns or Robert Louis Stevenson. Yet in Britain he is largely unknown and even in the land of his birth few Scots have heard of him.

The 10 year old boy from Dunbar who became the founding father of world conservation.
Earliest known photograph of Dunbar Castle When I was a boy in Scotland I was fond of everything that was wild ... I loved to wander in the fields to hear the birds sing, and along the shore to gaze and wonder at the shells and the seaweeds, eels and crabs in the pools when the tide was low; and best of all to watch the waves in awful storms thundering on the black headlands and craggy ruins of old Dunbar Castle. John Muir 1838 - 1914 Statue depicting
John Muir as a boy John Muir was born in Dunbar on April 21st 1838. As a child he developed a deep love of the natural world around his home. In 1849 the Muir family emigrated to the United States, and began the hard work of making a farm. Self-taught, John won a place at university and began to explore the wilderness areas of America. Through his writing and the force of his personality he won support for his ideas of conserving wild places for their own sake. He helped found the Sierra Club in 1892 to campaign for the preservation of natural environments. His legacy lives on in the National Parks of the world and in the greater awareness of the importance of wild places.

    John Muir
Naturalist and conservationist. Born in Dunbar, Muir emigrated with his family to Wisconsin (USA) in 1849, where he began to develop an interest in the natural world. He was the founder of the U.S. National Park system and regarded as the father of the modern environmental movement. Muir also formed the Sierra Club , dedicated to protecting the environment, and became its first president (1892). He was an early explorer of the Yosemite Valley and did much to ensure its protection. Muir is remembered in the names of numerous physical features and educational institutions in the USA, together with the John Muir Country Park and John Muir Birthplace in his native Dunbar. The John Muir Trust , which was a partner in the purchase and restoration of the Birthplace , was formed in 1983 for the preservation of Britain's wild places. The Trust owns and manages six estates in Scotland totalling 19,000 Ha (47,000 acres); namely Sconser, Strathaird and Torrin on the Isle of Skye, Schiehallion in Perth and Kinross, Sandwood in Sutherland and Knoydart.
