I have gleaned this insight from years of hiking the world's wisdom traditions. But mostly I have learned it in Muir's teeming forest. He teaches that we can step out beyond the books, the traditions, the philosophies that restrict the free rivering of our minds and dam the creativity of our communities; we may follow our streams into forests yet to be found. To climb with Muir is to reach remarkable vistas where we can see the smallest and the grandest as one forestas one interwoven whole. At the end of each trail is a celebration of this organic unity, a bow and a dance of reverence and joy." ~Chris Highland from the Book Jacket. . .

John Muir
John Muir - farmer, inventor, sheepherder, naturalist, explorer, writer, and conservationist - was born on April 21, 1838 in Dunbar, Scotland. Until the age of eleven he attended the local schools of that small coastal town. In 1849, the Muir family emigrated to the United States, settling first at Fountain Lake and then moving to Hickory Hill Farm near Portage, Wisconsin. Muir's father was a harsh disciplinarian and worked his family from dawn to dusk. Whenever they were allowed a short period away from the plow and hoe, Muir and his younger brother would roam the fields and woods of the rich Wisconsin countryside. John became more and more the loving observer of the natural word. He also became an inventor, a carver of curious but practical mechanisms in wood. He made clocks that kept accurate time and created a wondrous device that tipped him out of bed before dawn. In 1860, Muir took his inventions to the state fair at Madison, where he won admiration and prizes. Also that year he entered the University of Wisconsin. He made fine grades, but after three years left Madison to travel the northern United States and Canada, odd-jobbing his way through the yet unspoiled land.

Book Review by Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat John Muir: America's Naturalist
Thomas Locker
Fulcrum Publishing 05/03 Hardcover $17.95
ISBN 1555913938 "The grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never dried up at once; a shower is always falling; vapor ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal sunset, eternal dawn and gloaming, on sea and continents and islands, each in its turn, as the round earth rolls." Let these poetic words sink into your consciousness and stew a while in your heart. They were written by John Muir (1838-1914), founder of the Sierra Club and an advocate of the preservation of wilderness through a national parks system. In this simple but sensuous tribute to the naturalist, children's writer and illustrator Thomas Locker treats us to some of the scenic splendors of California and Alaska. Muir was born in Scotland and raised in Wisconsin, but his soul came fully alive when he arrived in Yosemite, California. There the beauty of the meadows and the groves of ancient trees took his breath away, and he was never the same. Locker best conveys Muir's attitude of wonder in a painting of him standing on the limbs high up in a Douglas fir. What is he doing there? Trying to experience the full shock and glory of a storm.

Muir's Tours John Muir John Muir - our namesake
John Muir (1838-1914) is the founder of the modern world conservation movement. Over two hundred sites in the USA are named after him including Muir Woods, Muir Beach, Muir Glacier and the John Muir Trail through the High Sierra.
Born in the fishing port of Dunbar, near Edinburgh, he developed an early awareness of the value of wild nature. At the age of eleven, he emigrated to the USA. He achieved fame as a botanist, geologist and glaciologist, amongst other things. He saw the damage that was being done to nature and predicted the sad state of affairs - the sanctuary of the wild places, lost forever. He pioneered what we now call Ecology.
He led the campaign for the protection of Yosemite and deeply influenced various presidents in designating over 50 areas and 200 national monuments. Muir set up the Sierra Club, which today is one of the leading environmental campaigning organisations in the world. Campaigning and writing over one hundred years ago, Muir could not foresee ozone depletion, or global warming, but today his conservation imperative cuts to the heart of current concerns over the sustainability of the world's natural resources and systems.

He moved to Wisconsin with his family as a child. "In God's wilderness is the hope of the world," he said. "The great, fresh, unblighted, unredeemed wilderness." In 1867, Muir embarked on his lifelong passion roaming on foot through the U.S. wilderness and writing about his discoveries. "When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world," he explained. The environmentalist lobbied feverishly for federal action to protect the unspoiled beauty of nature and was responsible for establishing the Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks. In 1992, he formed The Sierra Club , an organization dedicated to the preservation of wilderness.

"One night, my father came in with the most wonderful news that wild boys ever heard. He said, 'You need not learn your lessons tonight, for we're going to America in the morning.' "My father started with intention of going to the backwoods of upper Canada. Before the end of the voyage, however, he was persuaded that the States offered superior advantages, especially Wisconsin "He had found fine land for a farm in sunny, open woods on the side of a lake. Oh, that glorious Wisconsin wilderness. Here, without knowing it, we were still at school. Every wild lesson a love lesson, not whipped, but charmed into us. These were my first excursions, the beginnings of lifelong wanderings" - John Muir, Portage, Wisconsin, 1901.

Yosemite National Park's spectacular scenery inspired John Muir  Listen again to the programme John of the Mountains John Muir (1838-1914) spent his life exploring, writing about and fighting for the great wilderness areas of America - even though he was a Scot. He was born in Dunbar into a fanatically Christian home where he was beaten if he made a mistake reciting the Bible from memory. One evening, when he was 11, his father told him he didn’t have to study that night because “we are going to America in the morning”. And so began the trail of adventure, drama and exploration of the New World that led to him being hailed as the founding father of the modern environmentalist movement. John Muir was a man whose life was nothing short of inspirational. His writings are clear, vibrant and full of prophetic wisdom – he was one of the first to realise that all species are interconnected and “hitched together”. He developed a deep, spiritual connection with the land as he walked thousands of miles, from Alaska to Florida. He hated the blatant waste and foolishness of man and yearned for people to love and respect the wilderness. As his fame and following grew the Presidnet,  Theodore Roosevelt, wrote to him in 1903 to ask John to take him to the mountains. During this pivotal time John talked to him about the importance of the wilderness to the human spirit and the nation as a whole. As a result, by the time he left office in 1909 he had added 100,000 acres to the forest reserves, created 6 new National parks and 53 new wildlife refuges.
