[p. 219] De Nederlandse vrouwenpers in een internationaal perspectief Lotte Jensen Het bestaan van vrouwencircuits, hetzij als doelgroep hetzij als producenten van literatuur, is geen nieuw fenomeen. In de tweede helft van de zeventiende eeuw bestonden al internationale en nationale literaire vrouwennetwerken, zoals blijkt uit Met en zonder lauwerkrans Dit waren overigens netwerken die veelal niet exclusief uit vrouwen bestonden, maar waarin onderlinge contacten tussen vrouwen wel een belangrijke rol speelden. De achttiende, en in toenemende mate ook de negentiende eeuw, laten eveneens zulke netwerken zien, waarbij soms zelfs sprake lijkt zijn van een onverenigbaarheid van mannen- en vrouwencircuits (Van Dijk 1996: 247). Het ontstaan van aparte vrouwencircuits lijkt enerzijds in de hand te zijn gewerkt door de contemporaine, vaak negatieve denkbeelden over het vrouwelijke schrijverschap en de behandeling van vrouwelijke auteurs in de literaire kritiek als een aparte categorie (Showalter 1977: 73-97). Anderzijds zochten schrijfsters soms zelf bewust het contact met seksegenoten, bijvoorbeeld omdat ze elkaar tot inspirerende voorbeelden dienden. Een belangrijke, tot nog toe nauwelijks benutte bron voor het opsporen van netwerken tussen schrijfsters, zowel van nationale als internationale aard, vormt de periodieke pers voor en door vrouwen.
