Historical facts, figures, legends, rumours etc., after about 25 years of research by T.Knight. Several ideas as to the meaning of the name Froyle have been suggested, but the most likely seems to be that given by Christopher Hussey in Country Life. Froehyll - an old English word meaning Frea's Hill Nothing has been discovered before the 11th Century. Froli was a Royal Manor and was held by Edward the Confessor "in his own person". His Queen, Editha, held the manor of Alton (Aweltone). With the Conquest, Froli came into the hands of William the Conqueror and is mentioned in Domesday as Froli. William gave the manor to the nuns of St.Mary's, Winchester, known then as Nunnaminster. Nothing has been discovered during this century except that St.Mary's held the manor. The Abbess of St.Mary's, who owned Froyle Place, sold three tuns of cider at Froyle for 21/-. Out of four tuns made, two were retained by the Abbess for Bever (feast) on the manor.

  • The only text to anthologize the earliest period of children's literature (c. 1000-1850)
  • Selections range from complete stories, excerpted short stories, verse, to lessons
  • Selections are arranged chronologically and subdivided into appropriate thematic chapters to compliment the chronological organization
  • Richly illustrated with the original black and white woodcuts that serve to highlight the literature itself
Description Children's literature as we know it did not exist before the mid-eighteenth century; yet from medieval times on, a wealth of poetry and prose was read by and to children. In this anthology Patricia Demers illustrates the development of that literature, from its earnest beginnings to the dawn of its Golden Age, introducing the selections and placing them in historical context. From early colloquies and hornbooks to charming miniature libraries, the selectionsmany of which are accompanied by their original illustrationsprovide a window through which to trace the developing concept of childhood in itself and the cultural value of the child.

Originally presented at Collegium, October 1999, Chicago
Introduction S ince the publication in 1995 of the corpus of his antislavery essays and lectures by Len Gougeon and Joel Myerson, we are no longer entitled to the view that Ralph Waldo Emerson was disengaged from or uninterested in the commanding human issues of his times, particularly slavery. It is time now to acknowledge that, in these matters, Emerson and the bulk of his fellow Transcendentalists were not, in Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.'s assessment, "failure," but fulcrum, carrying far more than has been recognized of the spiritual, intellectual, and moral freight of that struggle. It is fair to say that he was, like Channing, a reluctant radical. He did not enter the fray predisposed toward controversial public engagement. Nor were the visible early figures in Abolition agreeable to him as personalities. But by the mid-1840s, he had willingly surrendered much of his public esteem to be counted among the "fanatics, madmen, incendiaries, traitors, and infidels." The role was both natural and inevitable. Octavius Brooks Frothingham, prominent among the Transcendentalists, explains
