Daisy, The Good Jersey Cow
Words and Music By: Mrs. Follen
Adapted By: Terry Kluytmans
Terry Kluytmans
Come, supper is ready,
Come boys and girls now,
Fresh milk for you, too,
From the good Jersey cow.
And here comes our kitty;
She means by 'meow,'
"May I have some milk
From the good Jersey cow?"
And when you meet Daisy, Just say with a bow, "Thank you for your milk, You're a good Jersey cow." If you haven't already done so, please take a moment to read the ' very important fine print ' regarding use of the songs on this site and other related information. CHAPTER X
    BROOKLINE IN THE CIVIL WAR
If a difference of opinion on the justifiability of Negro slavery was a primary cause of the Civil War, it had also been, from very early times, in some degree a point of dissension in Brookline. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, slavery was not generally viewed with humanitarian horror, and New Englanders of high rectitude and commendable virtue owned both Negro and Indian servants, while indentured men and women were scarcely better off, until their time was up. Chief Justice Samuel Sewall, who was at least a property owner in Brookline, published as early as 1700 a pamphlet called The Selling of Joseph. This was probably the first move against slavery in this country, developing as it did the thesis of a letter which Sewall wrote to judge Davenport, wherein he said: The poorest boys and girls, in this province, such as are of the lowest condition, whether they be English, or Ethiopians, or Indians; they have the same right to religion and life, that the richest heirs have. And they who go about to deprive them of this right attempt the bombardment of Heaven; and the shells they throw will fall down on their own heads. It is certainly open to speculation whether Sewall's forehandedness in opposing slavery may not have been expression of the remorse which he felt after his somewhat panicky enthusiasm for the conviction of witches. When the witchcraft excitement had died down, and the judge was able to view the matter more judicially, he concluded that his conduct had been rash. In fact he was very much ashamed of himself, and said so publicly.

True Stories About Dogs And Cats
    By Mrs. Follen
    With Illustrations by Billings
True Stories About Dogs And Cats. In a pretty, quiet village in New England lived Mary Chilton. She was a widow. She had two sons; and it was the occupation and the happiness of her life to do all she could to make her boys good and happy. I should say to help and teach them to be good and happy; for boys and girls must make themselves good; and then, of course, they will be happy; and no one can be made good or happy against his will. I hear some boy or girl who reads this say, "How old were they, and what were their names?" No boy can get along with another boy till he knows his name and age, and so, that you may be sure that they were real, live boys, I will tell you these important facts. The eldest was called Frank, and was nine years old. His brother was called Harry, and was seven. They were very much like other boys, somewhat disposed to have their own way in every thing, and a little vexed when they could not do as they pleased; sometimes really wishing to do right, and be obedient, and make their mother happy.

    Conscience
    by Mrs. Follen
    Illustrated with engravings.
Conscience. The short wintry days were beginning to lengthen, the sun rose earlier and staid up longer. Now and then a bluebird was heard twittering a welcome to the coming spring. As for the robins, they were as pert and busy as usual. The little streams were beginning to find their way out of their icy prison slowly and with trembling, as if they feared old winter might take a step and catch them, and pinch them all up again. Frank and Harry were sorry to see their snow man growing smaller and smaller every day; from being a large, portly gentleman, he was shrunk into a thin, shabby, ugly-looking fellow. His strong arms were about falling to the ground; his fat nose had entirely disappeared, and his mouth had grown so big that you might look down his great throat, and see the place where one of the boys used to go in to make his snowship talk. Frank and Harry loved all their winter amusements, and were loath to give up skating, sliding, and coasting, and above all, snowballing. Yet the boys enjoyed the lengthening twilight -the hour their mother devoted to them.
