Leopold Mozart teadis, et ta viieaastane poeg Wolfgang on geenius, viis lapse lühikestele kontserdireisidele Müncheni ja Viini. 1763. aastal algas esimene suur turnee, mis vältas üle kolme aasta. Pariisis kohtus Bach Itaalia -reisi ajal 1769.-71. aastal sai Mozart paavstilt Kuldkannuse ordeni ning ta valiti Bologna Filharmoonikute Seltsi liikmeks. Viimasel suurturneel 1777. aastal , juba noormehena, kohtas Mozart oma nõbu Maria Theklat . Hiljem vahetasid nad rõõmsasisulisi kirju. Mozarti rõõmule järgnesid aga pisarad. 1778. aastal Pariisis haigestus tema ema ja suri oma poja käte vahel. Masendatuna pöördus Mozart tagasi Salzburgi , kus temast sai peapiiskopi õukonna organist. Vajadus kedagi teenida riivas Mozartit, talle oli vastumeelt järgneda oma isandale kõikjale. Ta kirjutas lahkumisavalduse, kuid enne kui oleks saanud selle peapiiskopile üle anda, läks ta tülli kammerhärraga krahv Arcoga , kes helilooja paleetrepilt tänavale heitis.
