In the 1920s amateur athletes represented the purity of the sport, and the Olympic games exemplified this spirit.
The runners who entered the Transcontinental Foot Race had little concern for their amateur standing, considering the chance to win $25,000 worth the loss. The runners ranged in age from 16 to 63 and came from all over the world.
Some of the runners left jobs to run the race; others ran just to be able to say they did, but for the most part the runners were men who had nothing to lose. The runners' biographies featured here were taken directly from the original foot race program. Harry Abromowitz Gaudencio Alana Louis R. Alfano R. Paul Allen ... C. R. Brown Paolo Bruno Walter H. "Finalizowany jest program cyklu na 2002 rok a nawet na kolejne sezony - informuje nas Dionizy Pi¹tkowski, dyrektor ERY JAZZU. Zasadnicze, najwa¿niejsze kontrakty s¹ ju¿ podpisane, ustalane s¹ dodatkowe dzia³ania promocyjne, tak by ERA JAZZU nadal postrzegana by³a przede wszystkim, jako przedsiêwziêcie promuj¹ce muzykê jazzow¹ a nie tylko seria koncertowa. W ramach wspó³pracy z Chicago Jazz Institute zapraszamy do Polski legendarnych muzyków AACM. Po entuzjastycznie przyjêtych koncertach The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble swój warsztatowy kwartet przedstawi sam prezes AACM, wybitny saksofonista Ernest Dawkins. W marcu kolejna, ogólnopolska edycja festiwalowa ERY JAZZU, z koncertami gwiazd jazzu - m.in. Joseph Jarman, Ellery Eskelin, David Krakauer - w kilku miastach Polski. Na kwiecieñ planowana jest premiera pomys³u, nad którym pracujê od kilku lat: po³¹czenia muzyki wspó³czesnej z jazzem"
Na pocz¹tek sezonu ERA JAZZU proponuje trasê koncertow¹ charakterystycznego dla ca³ego nurtu "new black music" - warsztatowego kwartetu AACM. Jak w wielu zespo³ach "new black music" - podobnie w warsztatowym AACM Quartet artystyczn¹ jakoœæ tworzy kolektywna kreacja. W ramach ERY JAZZU zaprezentowany zostanie program z najnowszej, entuzjastycznie w USA przyjêtej p³yty "Fables For A New Millenium"

    Local Manchester Heroes
Greater Manchester and the wider northwest region of Lancashire has produced more than its fair share of famous people - pioneers, explorers, scientists, philanthropists, artists, composers, social and political reformers, media celebrities - all local heroes.
It is practically impossible to name them all, but we have included a substantial list of those contained within this website here. Their names are immotalised throughout the city and the Metropolitan Borough - in place names, streets, districts, townships and squares, statues and monuments, libraries, schools and institutions which still bear their names.

"No theologian could ever be a historian. The historian has only one concern: truth, whereas the theologian has something else at stake: his dogma." Joseph Ernest Renan (1823-1897) Creationists are their own worst enemies... Here are some examples of the ridiculous, non-scientific things that 'scientific' creationists have said. The first two statements absolutely exclude that the "Creation Theory" could be science. "If one is willing to make adjustments in the historical claims of the Bible, they can be correlated with the archaeological evidence, if one is willing to take some liberties with the archaeological evidence." - J. Maxwell Miller (how can can anyone trust what they say after reading this?)
"It is precisely because Biblical revelation is absolutely authoritative and perspicuous that the scientific facts, rightly interpreted , will give the same testimony as that of Scripture. There is not the slightest possibility that the *facts* of science can contradict the Bible. -Dr. Morris in very first paragraph of "Scientists Confront Creationism" edited by Laurie R. Godfrey

Ernest Reginald Wilsey was the first-born son of P. I. and Emma Josephine (Parsons) Wilsey. He was born on August 24th, 1883. Two siblings followed, Winnie Eugene, born April 10th, 1885, and a sister, Katie, was born on July 21st, 1887.
Historical material such as that which existed on Ernest's forbearers has not yet come to light, so we don't know as much about this man as we might like. However, his marriage records leave some account of his life and perhaps gives us a glipse of a shadow of despair in his life at the loss of three wives to death.
Ernest was first married to Ada Wayland, Circa 1904. Ada apparently died in childbirth in 1905 ... at the age of 18. The child was most probably a girl and named Thelma V. This information is based on a child's broken cemetery stone which is next to Ada's in Sand Cemetery.
When Ernest lost Ermine, he married Lola Fleming, bringing step-children into the family [number and name(s) unknown]. One child was born to this union ... Reggie Wilsey. The length of Ernest's marriage to Lola, as well as details about Lola's birth and death are unknown.
Ernest's last marriage was to Marie Shock who brought at least one daughter, Bette, to the growing family. An interesting sidenote to this marriage ... Bette married into the Waples family of Ernest's second marriage. Before his demise, Ernest and Marie brought a daughter, Claudette Marie, into this world.

The Muller, Herbert, mss., 1913-1976, consist of the correspondence, writings and lecture notes of Herbert Joseph Muller, 1905-1980, distinguished professor literature and government at Indiana University, Bloomington. Muller received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University in 1925 and stayed on to complete the Ph.D. degree in 1932. He joined the English Department faculty at Purdue University in 1935, then moved to Indiana University in 1956 where he remained until retirement. The writings in the collection are arranged alphabetically by title of publication. The materials for any given title will often include research notes for the book, photographs used for illustrations, galleys or page proofs where available, and copies of reviews following publication. Memorabilia for conferences, symposia and awards and honors follow the writings and include a scrapbook and diplomas from Cornell University. Class materials relating to courses given by Muller at both Purdue and Indiana University complete the collection. There is a box and folder list of the collection contents in the Vertical File.
