American Catholic
- Book Review, by Morris, Charles
From Library Journal
The New York Times Book Review, Peter Steinfels

Morris ... does not evade sensitive topics, from Irish Catholic attitudes towards African Americans at the time of the Civil War to the Vatican's dealings with fascist regimes in the 20th century. In almost every case, his judgements are both nuanced and unapologetic.
From Booklist
In magazine essays and books, Morris has covered many topics, from the arms race to AARP. Here he writes about "the rise and triumph of a culture, and of the religious crisis that has ensued in the wake of that culture's breakdown." Morris focuses on the construction of the large system of Catholic institutions that "reinforced religious/ethnic identity and protected lay people from the virus of freethinking," the goal of the Irish diaspora that arrived in the mid-nineteenth century. The "Americanist" battles of the '80s and '90s centered on these institutions, which "finessed . . . the old conundrum of how to adapt to American-style separation of Church and State by building a Catholic ministate." But the powerful U.S. Catholic Church of the 1940s and 1950s was weaker than it seemed: Catholics had assimilated; their less passionate ties to the church and its institutions encouraged current turmoil over theological, sexual, and other issues. Likely to stir debate.

CHARLES G. MORRIS In September, 1899, Mr. Morris was married to Miss Elisabeth Woodbridge, a daughter of Charles L. Woodbridge, of Brooklyn, New York, and they have six children: Laura W., Woodbridge E., Martha C., Daniel L., Charles L. and Elisabeth. The third and fourth mem-bers of the family were born at Newtown, Connecticut, and the others in New Haven. Mr. and Mrs. Morris hold membership in Center church, of which he is one of the deacons. His political endorsement is given to the democratic party and his study of the vital questions and problems of the country is far removed from that of a partisan standpoint. He was president of the State Civil Service Commission and he stands for progressiveness in public affairs at all times. For six years he was a member of the militia. For two and one-half months he served during the Spanish-American war with the naval troops as acting boatswain's mate. His interest in community affairs is indicated by his membership in the Chamber of Commerce and the Publicity Club and he is in hearty sympathy with the purposes of those organizations. Along social lines he has connection with the Graduates and the Lawn Clubs, while fraternally he is a Chapter Mason and professionally he is connected with the New Haven, the New Haven County and the Connecticut State Bar Associations.

Charles Morris
In the conclusion of the DCB write-up, we find: "Charles Morris was surveyor general of lands for the province for 32 years, a period which saw the founding of Halifax and Lunenburg and the coming of the pre-loyalists, when the colony's foundations were laid." To this I would add, that Charles Morris also played a very important part in the development of the province's justice system, occupying, as he did, a number of important positions on the bench. Charles Morris was born in Boston. His mother was a Rainstorpe. Charles was to marry into one of the high circles at Boston; his bride was Mary, the daughter of the Attorney General, John Read. Not much is known about his career up to the time Morris first came to Nova Scotia. Apparently he lived on his father's farm and taught school at Hopkinton, Massachusetts. At any rate, in 1746 he was to receive a commission from Governor Shirley . Morris was to raise a regiment and go to Nova Scotia. In 1746, there was a great deal of concern for the safety of Annapolis Royal, indeed of Boston itself, this, on account of a large French fleet, d'Anville's Armada , which was expected to arrive on the coast. By the time Morris arrived with his 100 New Englanders, the immediate threat had passed. He was ordered by

The History of The Round House - Chitterne
Charles Morris Charles' Dubious Naval Career Charles Morris took over the lease of the Round House in 1815, when his brother, Joseph Brown Morris, the previous leaseholder, died. Charles lived there until his own death in 1879. His obituary in the Warminster Herald of 20th December 1879 tells us that he joined the Royal Navy in 1801, and served on board the Donegal, in the fleet under Nelson. He was present as a midshipman at the Battle of Trafalgar. However, this is unsubstantiated, as no record has yet been found of a Charles Morris at the Battle of Trafalgar, in fact on the contrary, there is evidence that he was dismissed from the service. Later, when he lived at the Round House he was a Colonial Agent and even later, a fundholder, a man of means. Elizabeth Morris and her sons Charles and Joseph Charles and Joseph, sons of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Morris, were baptised in Mere, Wiltshire on 22nd May 1786. Elizabeth's gravestone is set in the floor of St Mary's Chancel, Chitterne. It is written in latin and translates as: "Here lies Elizabeth Morris, wife of Jeremiah Morris, gentleman of Mere in this county, of 24 years. Daughter of C. Shurland, Senator of the Barbados Islands. Died December 21 AD 1812."
