The Forster Collection
Introduction
John Forster (1812-1876) was a noted biographer, critic, essayist and historian, probably best remembered for his biography of his close friend, the novelist Charles Dickens (1812-1870). In the course of his life Forster collected a vast library, mainly, but not exclusively, of books and pamphlets. He bequeathed this collection to his wife until her death; whereupon it would pass to what was then the South Kensington Museum, so that it could be used by the nation. She generously waived her rights in order to fulfill his wishes more quickly. The Forster Collection is one of two very large and distinct collections within the National Art Library , the other being the Dyce Collection
English literature : from Augustan to Victorian
Forster was literary editor of the weekly Examiner from 1833 to 1847, and then its editor from 1847 to 1855. He arrived early enough in the literary world to know some of the later Romantic writers, such as Leigh Hunt (1784-1859); and remained long enough to see some of the first of the later Victorian novelists, such as George Meredith (1828-1909). The collection contains many nineteenth century novels which were given to him, either as review or presentation copies; and usually with an affectionate inscription from the author. One such example is Sartor Resartus (1838) by Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881). In addition to befriending some of the most famous writers of his day, Forster was also an influential critic who helped to establish younger literary figures, such as the poet Robert Browning (1812-1889). There is a copy of his work

Morley, Henry Examiner . From 1865-89 he was Professor of English Literature at University College He was the author of various biographies, including Lives of Palissy, Cornelius A grippa , and Clement Marot . His principal work, however, was English Writers (10 vols. 1864-94), coming down to Shakespeare. His First Sketch of English Literature Morris, Sir Lewis published Songs of Two Worlds , which showed the influence of Tennyson, and was well received, though rather by the wider public than by more critical circles. It was followed in 1876-77 by The Epic of Hades , which had extraordinary popularity, and which, though exhibiting undeniable talent both in versification and narrative power, lacked the qualities of the higher kinds of poetry. It deals in a modern spirit with the Greek myths and legends. Other works are A Vision of Saints, Gwen, The Ode of Life

Chemical Genealogy
Professor McCarty first developed the academic genealogy [McCarty, C. N., "Chemical Genealogy," J. Chem. Educ. , 317 (1969)] of the Department of Chemistry in the 1960's, patterning the effort after that of Virginia Bartow [Bartow, Virginia, J. Chem. Educ. , 236 (1939)]. The facility has been invaluable for the study of the history of chemistry and to show the interrelationships in the academic chemistry community. For the last 30 years, the ever-evolving Chemical Genealogy has resided in the 6' x 12' glass display case in the main floor lobby opposite the elevators in the Chemistry Building. In recent years, the facility has been maintained by Jim Oliver, Chemistry Librarian, and Bill Draper, Department of Chemistry Graphic Artist. We became aware, in early February 2002, that an extensive "Chemical Genealogy Database" had been made available on the WWW (the URL is: http://www.scs.uiuc.edu/~mainzv/Web_Genealogy/ ) by Vera V. Mainz and Gregory S. Girolami. This is a wonderful resource we have recently referenced to verify, correct and extend our information. Thank you Vera and Gregory! Other examples of Chemistry and Scientific Genealogies available on the WWW include those from: North Dakota State University York University (Toronto) University of Connecticut (organic chemists)

6 Boxes; 69 Volumes Background and Scope of Collection: Henry Michaels came to America in 1845 from England, opening his own tobacco business in Massachusetts. In 1849, he moved to Rochester and established a small clothing firm located downtown on Exchange St. near the aqueduct that carried the Erie Canal across the Genesee River. Michaels gained the reputation of producing quality suits at reasonable prices. However, during the next decade, Michaels’ products exceeded retail demand, forcing him to open stores throughout the surrounding area to get rid of the surplus. Additionally, in 1861 Michaels hired Rudolph Lichtenstein, Rochester’s first travelling salesman of men’s clothing, which proved to be a wise decision. Lichtenstein was so successful throughout the country as a salesman for Henry Michaels that he oversold his product, and the company had to close some of the extra retail stores in order to have enough merchandise to honor Lichtenstein’s contracts. Michaels-Stern & Co. contributed to the World War II effort by making U.S. naval officers’ uniforms. After the war, the company increased its productivity, and in 1951 it absorbed the Rochester firm of Levy-Bros. & Adler-Rochester, Inc. Included in the takeover were the rights to the successful "Adler-Rochester" and "Mt. Rock" overcoat labels, as well as Levy-Bros. & Adler-Rochester’s Hand St. factory, where Michaels-Stern & Co. subsequently concentrated all of its sewing operations. However, the 1950s saw a steady decline in the men’s clothing industry of Rochester as the city failed to keep pace with expansion in other parts of the country.

EDGEWOOD CEMETERY
Introduction and Part 1
Compiled and contributed by David Donahue Edgewood Cemetery began in the late 19th century as a church cemetery for Gallagher View Baptist Church (now Gallaher Memorial Baptist Church). In 1928 Edgewood Cemetery was organized as a not-for-profit corporation. Edgewood Cemetery surrounds the original church cemetery and the Edgewood Cemetery corporation provides maintenance for the combined cemetery. The original church cemetery is stilled owned by the church and is not actually a part of Edgewood Cemetery. There is no uniform layout to the older church part of the cemetery. At the time Edgewood Cemetery was created, families which belonged to the church or were already using the cemetery claimed areas within the original church cemetery boundaries for future use, and have continued to use the remaining space there. Edgewood Cemetery was designed to have a central family marker serving six to ten graves. Individual markers surround the central marker. In theory this would produce clusters of graves of related individuals. However, in many cases a central marker is missing and individual markers seem to be for unrelated individuals, or only one or two individuals have been buried. Information in quotation marks is presented on the markers themselves. Information in brackets after the individual's dates is compiler observations or comments. For convenience in typing and checking the transcription, and to narrow where a reader would have to look to find a listed grave, I have arbitrarily divided the cemetery into five parts as indicated in the map below. This is purely for convenience and does not reflect the sections as defined by the Edgewood Cemetery plot maps and surveys. The Callaher View Baptist Church Cemetery is included in Part 1. The cemetery was recorded over several weekends February through April 1989. The typed transcript was proofread against the markers to try to correct as many mistakes as possible and to have a second chance to record any markers missed. It was updated circa January 1997.

It's usually arranged in alphabetical order and shows the location of each word in the book. It often supplies several words of the context in which each word is found. The Exhaustive Concordance by Dr. James Strong (1822-1894) went beyond the mere listing of words and references to give "exhaustive" a whole new meaning in biblical reference books. An exhaustive word index to the KJV and a simple guide to the relation of the English Bible to the original [Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek] languages, Strong's Concordance has remained unsurpassed for more than a century. However, advances in biblical scholarship and computer technology, as well as shortcomings in Strong's methodology, have made a new edition desirable and even necessary. For the first time, The Strongest Strong's Exhaustive Concordance rebuilt the original from the ground up. We seek to honor and improve on the strengths of Strong's innovative excellence." John R. Kohlenberger III in The Strongest Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible "Grace and truth together reverse the effects of the fall, which were separation from God and others. Grace and truth together invite us out of isolation and into relationship. Grace, when it is combined with truth, invites the true self, the 'me' as I really am, warts and all, into relationship. It is one thing to have safety in relationship; it is quite another to be truly known and accepted in this relationship. With grace alone, we are safe from condemnation, but we cannot experience true intimacy. When the one who offers grace also offers truth (truth about who we are, truth about who he or she is, and truth about the world around us), and we respond with our true self, then real intimacy is possible. Real intimacy always comes in the company of truth." Dr. Henry Cloud in
